| I have registered my domain name with netork solutions,
and successfully setup the site on my 2000 server.
however, i can type the url without www and it comes up.
i cannot get the www ahead of the url to work. am i
missing something, or is this a network solutions problem?

Put in a DNS request such that yourdomain.com AND <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.yourdomain.com" target="_blank">www.yourdomain.com</a> are
registered in the DNS services that you're using. Think of www as just
another subdomain name, just like when you see something like
updates.somesite.com or help.somedomain.com. Those names need DNS
registrations just like any other domain name.

ok, so if I have it right, my end thus far is not to
blame. Networksolutions needs to setup an A record for my
DNS server that includes the "www" (www.mysite.com). Have
I understood that correctly?
much appreciation,

Setting up the A record is done by your ISP or whomever runs the DNS server.

i run my own dns server on the web server. like i said, i
can typer in mydomain.com and get the approproiate
content, but <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mydomain.com" target="_blank">www.mydomain.com</a> is not available. So the
problem IS on my end?

Yes, it is on your end, if you run the DNS-server for your domain. But
earlier in this thread, you said that NetworkSolutions was running your
DNS-server. I think the latter is correct. Talk to the one that administrate
mydomain.com, who that is, can only you answer...
