Post subject: using www.safenames.net / idp365.com to transfer domains
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster, others (more info?)

Anyone has heard of www.safenames.net or idp365.com ?

A professional domain name grabber-and-reseller has them as the registrar of
the domain we want to buy.
He wants payment after transferring the domain name under control of an
account created for us on that site...
but...:
Because he set up the account for us he is listed as a 'parent' and can
always manage the account - effectively giving them the power to just take
back the domain after receiving the payment....

There is no way on the web site to set up your own independent account, and
the support does not seem to answer phones or emails on the weekend (we'll
see if this improves Monday...)

All this seems like a pretty strange setup...

Under this setup escrow.com would pay out the money once the whois info is
changed to our name, but the current owner has the access to just change it
back afterwards...

It looks like this registrar does not stop people other then those listed in
whois info from modifying the domain name info...

Is having the domain transferred to our account at a completely different
registrar the only way to be certain the domain is yours, and if so does any
escrow service oversee that type of transfer? (as escrow.com just seems to
monitor whois)...

I searched google groups and could not find virtually any mention of
www.safenames.net or idp365.com...

So far all this sounds like a scam and we're probably just going to walk
away from that mob... unless anyone can suggest how to work a domain
transfer with 100% certainty we'll get what we pay for...

You could ask them to transfer it to a registrar where you already have an
account, or where you can easily get one.

I'm sure if they want the sale they will oblige!

Safenames.net are a proper registrar, check them out on Internic here:

We're going to ask to have the name transferred to our godaddy account - but
as the name was only recently dropped and then registered by the seller we
will have to wait 60 days before that can be done Sad that's the rules
apparently - and I was advised that if domain is transferred to a different
registrar in less then 60 days then this apparently is not a valid transfer
and can be revoked at a later date... Not too sure what the rationale behind
the 60 day rule is...

Guess the main problem I have with the whole setup at www.safenames.net was
the account which was created by seller for me and which could supposedly be
used by me to receive the domain turned out to be some sort of a child
'sub-account' form the seller's account, and the seller (who is a 'parent'
of the new account) had full access to it... so he could change whois info
in future and delete my account... this was not immediately obvious and it
took some digging around to figure out...

I also found it a bit strange that there is virtually no history of
safenames.net or idp365.com on any news postings...

Also from escrow.com's FAQ:
"What do I do if my name shows up on WHOIS but the Seller hasn't sent me the
user name and password?
Once funds are sent to the Seller and the Whois information shows the Buyer
as the proper owner, legally the Buyer is the owner of the domain name. If
there are any issues after that point, the Buyer must contact the Registrar
to resolve any issues over the ownership of the domain -- the Registrar will
recognize the escrow transaction as a legally binding agreement."

Are they joking? What is the point of using Escrow.com if they will not see
the whole thing through themselves - this sounds like they will simply dump
you midway, and then say "... oh, yeach you better find yourself a good
lawyer and sue the guy in Korea who is still holding the domain name..."

What about contacting safenames yourself and asking for your own account or
explaining the situation to them?

How's about asking the seller to do this???

You could always register a name through safenames to get your own account.

These things should be hassle free. Registrars do not have a God-given
right to exist, they must abide by the rules of Internic and ICANN.
