Hi,
I bought domain name at godaddy.com and I have webhosting at my own
computer. How can I make that when I type www.mydomain.com it would
understand that it supposed to go to my computer ? My computer is
properly configured (apache) and it is working.
Thank You

Its called: DNS
Domain Name System

Basically in a nutshell what you need to do is:

1) find a nameserver service
2) set up your domain name in the nameserver service so that it will point
to the IP address for your server
3) the nameserver service will give you nameservers to use, something like:
NS1.NAMESERVEREXAMPLE.COM and NS2.NAMESERVEREXAMPLE.COM
4) With the nameservers you then log in to GoDaddy.com. YOu will see they
have a space for you to enter/set the nameservers. You will pick CUSTOM
NAMESERVERS on godaddy and then enter the nameservers your provider gave
you.

And then thats about it. It can take up to 48 hours for the domain name to
propagate (it can take up to 2 days for the domain name to start pointing to
your server)

You can try: www.zoneedit.com for free nameserver service (they give you 5
free zones) and they have some FAQs on there

If you really want to read a lot of useless info about all this you can
check out the website www.dns.net

Firstly, read Auggie's post. I'd not thought of the nameserver route and if
you have a fixed IP address at home then that is the way to do.

If you have a dynamic IP address then look into registering with a
dynamic-dns company such as no-ip.com or dyndns.com (or there are others).
They will provide you with the means to associate a dns name with your
dynamic ip address (for example cryer.no-ip.org points to my "server" at
home). Then in whatever control panel godaddy provide you should be able to
set-up the DNS records for your domain to point to the alias you've created.

As with nameservers, remember that any change to DNS can take up to 24 hours
to propagate - although in my experience its much faster.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I tried to use that zoneedit.com, I configured www.mydomain.com
and mydomain.com to point to my ip address (static) and now I am
waiting for the results. it is sad that I need to wait for so long. I
hope that in the morning it will be ok already Smile
And just one more question ? is there any chances to do it with
godaddy.com only ? as they have they own namservers.
I found forwarding and masking only, but it is not the same. At that
moment I realy disappointed in godaddy.com. Maybe they have cheap
prices, but they do not provide any services or faq's or smf. They
just want you to order more and more services from them.

Having to wait for domain name propagation is just how the internet works.
It can take up to 2 days, but it can actually start to take effect in an
hour or two.

You pointed the domain name to your IP through zoneedit... you didn't
mention it, but you do have to go in to your godaddy.com control panel and
point the nameservers that zoneedit provides you with if you haven't done
that already (log in, click on MY DOMAINS, pick the domain you are working
with and then click on the NAMESERVERS button)

GoDaddy is a domain registrar. Many registrars also offer DNS services, but
GoDaddy doesn't. Can't say what they do and don't have in information as
their site does have a lot of info but isn't very condusive to finding that
information.
