I hope this doesn't come across as a totally ridiculous question, but
what exactly is a "web site"?

On the face of it, I would have thought that a web site is ONLY
defined as a folder situated directly underneath the "Web Sites" level
in the IIS Manager. Any folder further down the tree is not
technically a web site since it's merely a sub folder or virtual
directory of a bona fida web site.

However, since I can "create" an application at a level further down
the tree (thereby assigning it an application pool), I am now
wondering if the proper definition of a web site is anything running
within an application pool.

I'm just wanting to get my terminology right - my colleagues and I
frequently talk about "web sites" but we don't really know what we
mean by the term "web site". Therefore, I am wondering if there is a
de facto definiton of what a web site is when it comes to IIS 6.0.
Any thoughts?

google is our friend... repeat that 50 times then go there and search for

define "web site"

i kind of like the generic "a collection of web pages" though it can go
beyond that if there are services and dynamic data or other variable things
associated with the pages.

In addition to what everyone else has said ...

It's just a logical collection of web pages. It could mean a whole server
or a set of files in a folder. It's up to you exactly what it means - in
the context of how you use it and what you're talking about.

It's the same as any other definition. It's a page or set of pages
accessible using a web browser. In IIS, it's whatever you configure
as a web site..
