My personal favorites are on Craigslist where people are looking for
someone to make a site for them and the compensation offer is a "split of
the profits".
One of my favorite pasttimes is replying to those posts with the following:
"Hey, I saw your ad on craigslist and I am very interested. Please forward
me your 5 year business plan, marketing strategy, and an outline on how
much of your time and money will be devoted to ensuring this project's
success"
I've not yet gotten one response.

LOL, I get those, too, where someone comes to me with *really* heavy
CGI/DB needs and they don't want to pony up the cash to get it done. On
the *very* rare items where I've said "sure, we can enter a partnership
where I will have a voting say in how the business is run, since I have a
lot more experience in this online stuff than you", most of em have run
away.
One of em, I know own 100% (CanadianISP) and another one (adult toys
site) I did it more for the silly perverted fun of it than out of any
expectation of seeing real profits
The whole 'adding to your portfolio bit' - I dunno - Mind you, that's
easy for me to say, since my work can be objectively measured, rather
than subjectively, but if it were my business, I don't think I'd want to
be risking the whole public face of it on someone who's never done it
before :/

Do you mean dsigner as in graphic design? Probably best to be specific.

That's not really a tempting offer is it? Any established designer worth
their salt will already have hosting sorted, so your offer amounts to a 50
bucks coupon. Not sure how quality much work you'd expect to get from a
designer for that.
In any event, good luck.

Wow, I missed that - Perfectly good opportunity to heap scorn on a silly
offer - missed! For shame on me! Must be the Friday thing, yeah, that's
it...
To the OP:
You get what you pay for. If your "unlimited Linux hosting" is sitting
somewhere on a T1 or lower - no offence, but big deal. (Same applies if
it's bandwidth-capped). What storage space are you offering ? Your Linux
hosting - is it root access or just a virtual host ? (Trust me, I'm not
offering - I'm no designer). As William said, though, 99.9% of designers
out there already have their own hosting figured out, so what you're
asking for is an overall site design for $50.
Last time I paid a designer $50, I got a few custom buttons and their
mouse-over states for it. Money well spent, IMO. For the whole site ? On
fifty dollars ? As William said: Good luck (May I add: You'll need it)

At least he/she is prepared to offer something, unlike many who are
always wanting something for nothing! A good opportunity for someone
starting out, add to their portfolio.

The graphic artists have a site to deal with that sort of abuse.
