It seems like a rather clean site Mr. Finke, but other than some navigation
and language mods, there appears (at first glance) not much to the site at
all.
It looks kind of like a tourist info spot on the islands...
You did a good job, but it should not have taken more than a day or two to
make that (assuming client gave you the info/text and content)...
I would think there is a communication problem or someone is pulling your
leg by posting that ad...The site looks good, pretty clean, and is a nice
general use site.
I would expect these things below to pay more than 500 for the site though
(and these are all things a viewer such as myself cannot see)
Can the client upgrade and change all information by logging into a 'admin
center'?
Can the client add more languages?
Does the uploading of photos use GD library or imagemagick to resize and
watermark photos?
The Merchant account to buy one seems fine, can the admin add more items at
will or is it only hardcoded?
and there are some more I would want, but I cannot tell from just looking at
it. If you have done these things then you should get way more than 500.
In my experience when I first started hiring programmers I found that cash
upfront meant goodbye to my money and poor programming. Others were paid on
'per finished' sections of code, these programmers always took months to
complete a 3 day program, and it was awful.
After one year of this I bought all the php, mysql, linux, and javascript
books I could lay my hands on and am almost done rebuilding the site from
the ground up (not viewable at this time) with a great content management
system that will handle a few thousand clinets..(I hope)
My advice to bothe sides (as I have been on both sides now) is to define,
within reason, what you need and the scope of the project...and more
importantly for both of you to realize where the 'support' and programming
paid for ends... along with a special understanding of "addons" or mods not
originally mentioned (as happens very often)
Without a very clear understanding, each side will feel screwed by the
other... The website owner unhappy with unfinished and 'needs repair' work,
the programmer biting at the chafes because for all that work he/she did not
get paid all the money he/she expected.
What I found with hiring programmers is they say "sure, I can do that, and
quickly"... Some of them mean it, some have to buy a book to do it. They
spend so much time trying to figure out how to make it work (cause in many
cases they do not know how to do it in the first case) that at the end of
the 'mission' they feel like they put in hundreds of hours (where mostof it
was 'scratching their head' time) and expect to be paid for learning.
Website owners on the other hand want a program so sophisticated that they
never have to learn code and will just be able to 'nap their fingers' and
make any changes, upgrades, redesigns...
It is a tough world for both sides when you are talking low budget or side
work...
If you have all those things up there I mentioned, It would be worth about
1500 and less than a weeks work (4 working days, 2 days sitting with client,
1 day watching TV...), If you do not have that stuff, then 500.
Some programmers out there ask for 5000 or more... but I guarnatee a
programmer that knows his/her stuff has enough 'working models' of
logins/logouts, shoppingcarts, photo manipulation, content management system
engines, that they would be done much sooner than the 7 days I specified.
So, in summary, I must say that I had to vent my frustrations of finding
poor programmers and crazed site owners in the last year.. I do not know
who is right or wrong with the alohacard site, but I do know that it appears
both sides do not have a clear understanding of exactly what to expect form
the other, which leads to the anger and resentement and posting of ads in
this space...
