Post subject: w3wp.exe going to 100%
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello, everyone.

I have an aspx page that queries a OLAP cube via ADO (not ADO.NET).

The page is run at various times during the day on an ad-hoc basis, and is also run 90 times each morning to make canned reports.

This had been running fine for a month or two; recently, however, the first time the page is run each morning, the system spikes to 100% cpu utilization, and the entire web application becomes unresponsive.

When I first started seeing the problem, the 100% was distributed between lsass.exe and w3wp.exe (mostly lsass.exe). When this occured, if I rebooted the system, then re-ran the canned reports, everything would be OK. Until the next day.

Yesterday, I applied the lsass.exe hotfix from KB article 821008. This morning, lsass.exe was fine, but w3wp.exe had spiked to 100% utilization, and the web app was again unresponsive. I recycled w3wp.exe, and was able to re-run the canned reports.

I took a IISState log this morning (see below). Not sure how to interpret it, but it seems like the MSOLAP OLE DB driver may be blocking the other threads? I appreciate any help...

Jonathan

The dealock of msolap80.dll is obvious, there are a batch of threads
waiting for it to release the lock. However, the DllRegisterServer
function call in the log is masked and useless. This is because
Symbols doesn't match and so iisstate use the exposed function name
DllRegisterServer and an offset to represent the actual function
call. Therefore from the log we cannot determine what the thread was
doing at that time.

I saw an exactly similar SQL2K/OLAP/ASP case with this kind of call
stack is currently opened in PSS. I recommend you also report an
incident to PSS for debugging. A SQL engineer who has the internal
Symbols of msolap80.dll can help you find out the root cause. Also,
if the issue is finally confirmed being caused by a bug, the case
charge will be refunded or waived. You can find your local PSS phone
number from the following link:

Tnanks for your reply. It seems to me to be a bug as well. Will the other incident result in a KB article/hotfix? Is there some way I can alert the PSS folks about the other case?

Jonathan,

They are still in the process of analyzing the hang dump and haven't
got a conclusion. The case ID and title is:
SRX040116600700
SQL2K/OLAP/ASP application with HTTP connection

Thank you!

Looks like it's been open for a long time, hasn't it? I'll call if you think there's some info I can give to help diagnose the problem, but otherwise...

I'm going to try recycling my w3wp.exe when it hits 99% CPU and see if that works around the problem.

Well, that didn't seem to help.

Is there any possibility that this is related to the problem described in KB article 838840? I don't think I'm using VBA, but I am using formatting and various SQL functions.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
