I have Windows XP Professional with IIS 5.1.
(I also have SQL Server 2000.)
When I try to open a .ASPX file on
http:\\localhost\InetPub\wwwRoot, I get the error
"SERVER APPLICATION UNAVAILABLE".

Hello,

See this:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.asp.net/faq/ms03-32-issue.aspx" target="_blank">http://www.asp.net/faq/ms03-32-issue.aspx</a>

Maybe helps.

Joan,
First of all the link you should be trying is <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://locahost" target="_blank">http://locahost</a> (not
http:\\localhost\InetPub\wwwRoot). Your site might be pointing to
C:\inetpub\wwwroot. Can you browse an asp or html page successfully?
Check your event logs to see what error/warning is logged corresponding to
the Server Application Unavailable error. You can either post the logs here
or search <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com</a> to find out the reason for those
errors. Without knowing what is causing the problem, I wouldn't recommend
that you apply any hotfixes or patches.
