Hi
I am setting up a shop using OS Commerce.
I have registration with Verisign and ( my webmaster tells me ) an SSL
server. I am told my site does not store any Credit card numbers which
go straight to my bank's server and we get notification of payment.
First, is this how its supposed to work? I am worried that my shop
might store some Credit Cards and they might get stolen.
Second, I am dealing with 8-10 suppliers. When I get an order, I want
the order to be automatixally forwarded to to the vendor, and the
instructions for payment go to my accountant who can make a check as
soon as shipping confirmation is received. Thats pretty normal stuff
but can I add this on my OS commerce site?
Finally, which is a better, functional shop with backend to transact
with vendors and add stock details as EXCEL files / of Access DB
rather than loading one things at a time.
If you are a professional in this stuff and can manage a shop as a
webmaster- I
am looking for a partner - I have more than 1,000 visitors per day and
in my niche business I think I can do pretty decent turnover.

Howdy MetaC,
OS Commerce is certified by Authorize Net so you are okay there.
You say "Notification of Payment" which indicates the funds are transferred
immediately. If you are selling hard goods, you are violating Visa and
Master Card requirements that money is not to be transferred until the goods
are shipped. The transactions should be performed as Pre-Authorizations,
which you finalize after shipment.
If someone knowledgable complains, you may find you lose the money and they
keep the goods. You may also lose your merchant card account.
Real-time completed transactions are only appropriate for software that can
be downloaded immediately. Your judgement call since many major sites
violate this. However, the delay while getting things shipped means fewer
problems with stolen credit cards.

This is not good management. Each order should probably be screened before
they are forwarded to the shipper. If the orders include several of your
vendors, those need to be split. You might find someone that can modify the
code for OS Commerce to automate it.

I use Excel compatible data bases with BIZyCart (www.bizycart.com). You can
make large changes off-line and upload the corrections or do small changes
on-line via the management interface. It's impossible to avoid storing the
credit cards somewhere. However, there are ways to do it in a very secure
fashion.

A "Webmaster" would be someone who knows how to maintain the entire server
for multiple web sites as well as handling anything needed for web design
and programming. Some of the sites I Webmaster on our BIZynet servers bring
in over $10,00 a month. Be glad to discuss more details with you.
