| When I configure IIS using 'computer management', I see different

icon's meaning? Thanks

Thank you for your help. I guess it is IIS 6.0, but how can I get the
version number of IIS?
I am using MMC 3.0 version 5.2.
Since I cannot post image , so I try to describe
Under Default_Web_Site, there is a directory called _vti_bin which
have a special icon(different from directory icon or virtual directory
icon), so I want to know if this directory have special purpose in
IIS.

It would probably help if you told us:
a) which version of IIS you were using
b) what version of the Computer Management MMC you were using (e.g. you can
remotely manage IIS from another computer)
For IIS 6.0, does this help?

Or do you see other icons besides those three noted?
Cheers

Also, you mension IIS's version is determined by OS version, but is it
possible for someone to install IIS6 on Windows XP?

Hi,
Windows 2000 = IIS5
Windows XP = IIS5.1 (or IIS6 if you are running Windows XP 64bit edition)
Windows 2003 = IIS6
Windows Vista = IIS 7
_vti_bin is a Frontpage Server Extensions folder. On my machine it looks
like a folder with a small globe icon superimposed. That indicates a virtual
directory
Cheers

Frontpage and Frontpage Server Extensions (FPSE) are two different products.
One is a client, and the other is a server component. I can't comment on
what you saying because I don't know which product you are talking about.
Frontpage client has been discontinued - new product is called "Expression
Web"
You would not have these FPSE folders if you did not install Frontpage
Server Extensions on your server.

If you have Windows XP 64bit edition, you can get IIS 6.0
If you have Windows XP 32bit edition, you have IIS 5.1. It is not possible
to upgrade this to IIS 6.0
