Post subject: Which user thread to use for apache?
Archived from groups: alt>apache>configuration (more info?)

Hi list,

since i am not to familiar with apache installations (2.0.52) on Linux (Red
Hat 9), i need to know, what user apache should make use of when serving a
php-application.

In my specific case, i created all files as root, changed the ownership of
the entire project folder to "apache" and realized, that the apache-server
(running as User nobody) could not write-access a specific folder for file
uploads.

I then changed to "User apache" in the httpd.conf. But somehow i do not
feel to good with that?

What is the professional way?

Thanx in adv.,

Dominique

Normally Apache use "nobody" or "www" as user.

Give write access only when and where necessary. If you can, DO NOT
give write access at all.

Hi Davide,

shall i give write access to the upload folder for "nobody" instead? I
certainly need to give write access, otherwise php reports an error when
move_uploaded from tmp to the project folder. What is the difference
between www and nobody?

Thanks,

This is a php issue or a general security issue, not an apache
specific. If you need to give write access to something to have
a specific application working check the documentaton and the
eventual restriction of the application.

Sometime is better to use a user that make clear what is used for.
"www" is much clearer than "nobody".
