Sorry, I should have listed the things I've checked/done. The account is
definitely an admin account. I've tried booting in safe mode, uninstalling
Norton Internet Security, and doing an Update install from my XP CD. I've
even tried (as suggested by one note I found) removing the inetsrv
directory, though I think I had to boot into a separate Windows install -
it's a dual boot machine - in order to do that, as my main system shows the
inetsrv directory as in use.
I think that last point may be a clue. Something prevented a full
uninstall the first time I tried, leaving the system in this incongrous
state where nothing works. So if I could figure out which service or
process were actually using the inetsrv directory, that might help. Other
than that, then the only thing short of a clean reinstall of XP that I can
think of is to figure out exactly what registry changes I'd neet to make to
clear things up. That's certainly not for the faint of heart (and I may
just give up until I'm ready to upgrade the machine).
