Somehow I have gotten my IIS installation into a state where I can neither
install nor uninstall it. The checkbox in Add Windows Components for IIS
is grey, and if I open the Details, none of the checkboxes work (even
though they're white).

Any ideas as to how to fix this?

Thanks,

Gary

Make sure you're logged in as a local admin.

Sorry, I should have listed the things I've checked/done. The account is
definitely an admin account. I've tried booting in safe mode, uninstalling
Norton Internet Security, and doing an Update install from my XP CD. I've
even tried (as suggested by one note I found) removing the inetsrv
directory, though I think I had to boot into a separate Windows install -
it's a dual boot machine - in order to do that, as my main system shows the
inetsrv directory as in use.

I think that last point may be a clue. Something prevented a full
uninstall the first time I tried, leaving the system in this incongrous
state where nothing works. So if I could figure out which service or
process were actually using the inetsrv directory, that might help. Other
than that, then the only thing short of a clean reinstall of XP that I can
think of is to figure out exactly what registry changes I'd neet to make to
clear things up. That's certainly not for the faint of heart (and I may
just give up until I'm ready to upgrade the machine).

Thanks again for any suggestions,

It's XP, use a system restore point to recover from prior to the
install. Though if it's this hosed, a clean install might be the best
at this point.

A good suggestion, but unfortunately the older restore points are gone.
One of the incidents in this comedy of errors is that the first time I
tried the upgrade reinstall, I didn't realize that it would wipe the
digital driver for my LCD. The result was that the system appeared to hang
with a black screen. So I went through a couple of iterations not really
being sure what was happening during the install, until I finally decided
to pull out the analog cable and get that hooked up instead. (The other
annoyance is that this whole thing started after I installed Outlook 97,
figured out that it doesn't behave on XP, uninstalled it, discovered that
uninstalling Outlook messes up Outlook Express, and started on the
reinstall path to fix OE - because MS, in their infinite wisdom, doesn't
make an IE/OE 6 standalone installation kit.)

I think you're right that a clean install may be the simplest (not that I'm
really prepared for that right now).

Thanks,
