Post subject: unable to install iis5.0 on win XP pro

I have the strangest problem.

installing iis from add/remove programs >> windows
components, does not prompt me for the Win XP cd at all,
and yet as far as my system is concerned, iis 5.0 has
been installed and is runing..
inetManager lists all processes as up and running..

yet i can't run any asp pages..
or even..get the default page via
http://localhost

could someone please tell me what's wrong?

Hi,

If you have the installation files on your hard disk, the installer may
install from that (if it's been configued to look on your hard disk).

That said, when you say, you can can't get any ASP pages to run, what do you
see?

thanks for the speedy reply ..
It just seems odd
that the files would be on my hard disk..as everyone else
i know who've had installed iis.. didn't?

In any case, this is the error message displayed
(but the folder inetpub has been already been created..):

The page cannot be displayed
There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach
and it cannot be displayed.

1. whether you have your files on the hard disk or on a CD is down to
who built the PC in the first place
2. can you check if friendly error messages are turned off in IE under
tools->internet options?

Please uncheck "Show Friendly HTTP Errors" in IE (Tools -> Options ->
Advanced).
Reload the page, and post the real error.

500 Internal Server Error means that the server is running, and can be
reached, but an error occured processing that page.

OK - now go and look in the Windows Event Log and see what's there.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Event Viewer
