Post subject: unable to connect to target machine
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Starting last night, I've noticed that Internet Explorer
would return a 500 to my requests on several boxes. So I
logged on to the server to bring up Internet Services
Manager. Instead of getting the usual screen, I got a
message saying that it was "unable to connect to target
machine". Clicking yes will bring up the manager, but with
nothing in it. If I restart the box, the manager will come
up without errors, and my requests will no longer return a
500. However, this is happening quite frequently.

All the boxes are also running SQL Server 2000. I noticed
that replication between the publisher and subscribers was
broken. While broken, the problem with 500 and "unable to
connect..." doesn't appear. Once I fixed the replication
issue, this problem appeared again.

Does anyone have any insights?

etang,

If your server is crashing or hanging you might want to
download our ReJuvin8 tool. It's designed to detect then
restart or reboot. It doesn't fix root problems but it
does give you some breathing room while you are addressing
them. ReJuvin8 also gives you email and telephone alert
messages of what it's doing. Use it free for the first
15-days.

ReJuvin8 has both an automatic detect mode and a custom one.
In the auto mode you make all the settings by pointing and
clicking. This will handle most applications.

In the custom mode you can include heartbeat synch
files which give you absolute detection that certain functions
are working. ReJuvin8 includes tools and instructions to help
you do this. Need to get going immediately? We will contract
to set it up for you at your site.

Not a problem with ASP pages throwing 500. I think it's
strange that when I bring up Internet Services Manager, I
get "unable to connect to target machine". I believe this
is where the problem is.

Hi,

Have you secured your SQL Servers? Is it possible that they/(one of them) is
infected by the Slammer worm, and puts a huge load on your network?

When using IIS Manager, do you connect to the local running IIS, or a remote
one? Could you have some kind of network problems?

If you follow one of Tom's links, and instead of getting a 500 message and
get the real error message, what does it say? Maybe it gives us any clue
about what is going on. Have you checked Event Viewer?
