Post subject: What type of HTML encrytion is this?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

My customer showed me these two ASP pages. The first one (encrypted) is the
actual contents as seen under Dreamweaver. The second one is the exact same
page but viewed under Internet Explorer's view source code.

Any idea what type of encryption is this as I have no experience with ASP?

A lot of spammers send HTML with base 64 encoding, somehow thinking
that it will get by filters. If you dig around in IE's menus, you'll
find a box that will allow sending in base 64. Mozilla mail seems to be
able to decode it fine on the fly, as does IE.

I'm not absolutely sure that this is base 64, but most probably it is.
Just another bonehead spammer trick.

ASP is serverside coding, so the actual output is dependendant on the
code.... its a good way for people like me who dont trust all my clients to
give them some development work which is NOT easily editable by them, or
they can't steal as I can easily write in subroutines which say "f'up if
beyond x date"....

Its not hard to do, but most people can't be asked...

If you wrote a program, would you want everyone who bought it to be able to
see how the insides work?

ASP pages will nearly always look different in dreamweaver and IE......ASP
generates html code for your browser....The asp code doesnt get displayed,
only the html.....<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

That's new. It's been working fine for years.
I'll contact them, maybe put things on a mailto until it's
sorted out.

Thanks for the heads-up.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No, but I just spent the last 6 hours installing
a new Linux version, so I feel broken.

The contact form seems to be working fine for
me now - anyone still having trouble?

I suspect that some server was down for an
hour or two.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

: ASP is serverside coding, so the actual output is dependendant on the
: code.... its a good way for people like me who dont trust all my clients
to
: give them some development work which is NOT easily editable by them, or
: they can't steal as I can easily write in subroutines which say "f'up if
: beyond x date"....

*** This is what I suspected. Any idea where I can find the decoder? I
believe it is hiding somewhere in the customer's website.

not hard to do, I have done it a few times using PERL, be encrypting the
source and at runtime decrypting. You want to look for a declaration as to
what holds the encryption in the pages and what it uses to decrypt. We did
this when releasing commercial applications where we did not want the source
to be easily available to everyone. Easu enough to crack it if you look hard
enough. Maybe there is an include as well which defines the encryption
scheme. Just an idea.
