Hello

I want to make a web site in several languages. Do you suggest any
free web services which do online translations between English and
other languages. Is that translation reliable enough?

Thanks a lot

It'll depend on the goal of your site... if its just a little personal thing
you are putting up or a fan page where you want to say how great you think
__________ is, then a free translation service should be good enough.

If its a commercial site where you are selling something or trying to
provide a service that they would pay for then no... you would run the risk
of your site looking like a joke (have you read an of the machine translated
to english manuals from china and japan?) or possibly even offending the
reader.

If it is a commercial site you can also look at it like this: Is the added
feature/benefit of your site being available in other languages going to
generate enough revenue to atleast cover the cost of the translation? If
"yes" then obviously go for it and pay to have it done professionally... if
the answer is "no" then its just a waste of money.

If its a cost thing (IE: you don't have enough money to pay for having the
site translated right now) then just hold off and wait until the time comes
when you can afford it.

Free web translators are "ok" but if you want to look atall profesional in
the other language get a human fluent in the language and familiar with
the business you're in to do it.

Agreed 100%

Same holds especially true for print advertising. One of our clients
just did a brochure that they translated to French. A human in the
industry that was fluent in French did the translation. Then a French
man who could speak enough English to get the point across made about 20
corrections on an 8 panel brochure.

Point? (Dunno, do I have one?)

Get as many people as you can to read through and suggest fixes... and a
tip to you:

Don't say "it'll save you dough" when you mean money when creating a
piece that is to be translated to another language! Wink

You get what you pay for, obviously. That said, we use
www.freetranslation.com and have not had any complaints from readers.

Either that or they're laughing so hard that they can't use their
keyboards due to shaking Smile

No.

In addition the online translation services are available to the visitor
anyway. Far easier to just put a link to one of the online translation
services. Then it will be clear that any deficiencies are down to the
online translation service and not your site.

Better still get a proper set of translations made. It's probably a lot
cheaper than you think.

No.

For reliable translations that will help you sell your products instead
of make potential customers laugh you need a professional translator
with very good experience in your industry. Also, if you want a French
translation you need a French translator (i.e. living in France and with
French as mother tongue).

Finding the right supplier of translation services is very difficult
because anybody can say: "hey look I am a translator!". Even if he/she
has never studied translation, etc.

We had a hard time finding a good supplier. We finally found
www.technospeak.com and are happy with them.
