I'd not want to bog down my personal machine with a web server, perl
etc, so my advice would be to purchase a used PII-450 machine for
about $70 on ebay these days - download redhat and burn the ISOs to CD
- install the OS and opt to install Apache/Perl/MySQL/PHP etc - it
takes about an hour to do a full install and patch it.
I run a couple of 450Mhz machines in the office as development
machines, and I buy 20-40Gb drives, partition and drop on a copy of
FreeBSD, Redhat of various versions, and I have a couple of mandrake
drives hanging around. All told, my investment is less than $750, and
I have the ability to be developing on about 10 or 12 different
deployments of *nix, Apache from 1.3 to 2.0, MySQL from 3.23 to 4.0
and FreeBSD or Redhat 7 thru 9. I generally keep a FreeBSD/Apache
1.3.7/Perl 5.00.5 drive running, and a Redhat 9.0 with Apache 2.0. and
perl 5.80. MySQL and PHP variations can be varied - and I have one
machine running 3 different MySQL installation simultaneously.
Obviously, your ability to create and run these machines might be
different to mine (I'm not your typical webmaster, as I have a lengthy
unix background which predates the internet as we know it), but it
wouldn't harm you any to invest $100 in a machine to trash and play
around with - old Dell's run most variants of *nix without hitches -
the experience you will gain will be enormous, and you'll DEFINITELY
benefit long term from the experience.
