Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

G'day

I'd like to register a hosting account with YRHost (which hosts quite a
few of my other domains) but they've recently changed their policy in
that they only allow either hosting of existing domains or hosting of
new domains which were bought through their affiliate company,
Namecrave. The domain I'd like to register is with a "foreign"
registrar (.za.net), so Namecrave won't be able to help me there
(besides, Namecrave is likely to charge money, and my registrar is
free).

However, I can't register a domain until I have at least two DNS's
which are authoritative for it. Catch-22, hey. So, I need to find a
temporary free DNS solution.

I can't use Zoneedit because I've used up my free credits there and I'm
not going to reregister under a false name to get more free credits
(not good ethics). I tried Xname but I can't figure out how to make my
zone authoritative for the domain name.

Any help will be appreciated. Can you either give me some help with
Xname, or tell me of another place which will do temporary free DNS for
me?

Thanks a lot.
Samuel Murray (leuce, voetleuce, using new e-mail address)

PS. If you'd like to recommend a different host that offers 50 MB
space, 2 GB per month, CGI (and PHP/MySQL would be nice) and a control
panel for uder $15 per annum, be my guest. Smile

Almost any host should be able to setup an account for you, before you
register the domain. As for under $15...that shouldn't be hard to find
either. Wink

Honestly, it you've got your so mant domains domains then you should be able
to afford the cheapest plan at http://www.linode.com/products/linodes.cfm

I run by own dns server (bind) there.

Gregory's suggestion (http://everydns.net) is good. Your favourite S/E
will point the way to others.

That's what I thought as well. In fact, I was under the impression
that the host registration comes first, and then follows the domain
registration. The domain registrar asks for authoritative DNSs after
all.

But I've had a chat with YRHost's helpdesk and their reply is that
which I wrote in my first post. When I choose to register a hosting
account, the only option is "update nameservers for existing domain" or
something like that.

Sorry, Google's new Groups doesn't allow you to reply with headers
intact, and the Google reply box is tiny...

Well, I tried everydns.net, and although ns1.everydns.net is
authoritative, none of the other DNSs are. I even tried
parked.everydns.net as a secondary DNS, but its simply not
authoritative (according to the domain registrar).

I can't figure out how to get EveryDNS to "activate" my secondary DNS.
Can anyone help? Give me a clue, perhaps?
