Please see the posting from a few days back, where another user (including
myself) are having "issues" with the iis services on XP pro. Here was my
response to THAT post:
I have had this problem CONTINUOUSLY in XP Pro---IIS 5.1. I have uninstalled
and re-installed iis numerous times, to no avail. In my case, this problem
presents itself after a re-boot, and I can't connect to the internet (IE
6)--blank screen.
I then open services, and see iis related services (one or several) all
hung.
Happens with ALL iis related iis services (FTP, SNMP, etc), with no
particular consistancy.
I had do disable the service(s) (it let me do this while the services(s)
were hung---though I couldn't stop/start or pause), then reboot.
Then the services are, of course, disabled. It fixed it.....but at the
expense of the services being unavailable after the fact. After that,
Internet connectivity is restored in IE6.
I sit behind a router-firewall at home. I ALSO have Internet Security XP
(Symantec) on the XP box. I have a funky feeling that in my case the
Symantec Internet Securty has something to do with this.
Symantec has numerous articles on its knowledge base that indicate that IS
PROFESSIONAL is the only version supported and working on MS SERVER
software---it warns that IS XP is NOT supported on server softweare. I have
a funnier feeling that IS XP gets finnicky when you load server type snap
ins on XP Pro, as it makes XP pro behave as a server.
In order for my machine to serve up IIS on the net, I have to configure my
router for pass through to my XP box, dropping its jeans to its ankles ref
internet exposure--- THUS the double wammy on firewalls (router AND Symantec
IS). I haven't tried loading IIS and testing it with Symantec IS
uninstalled. I wouldn't know how to do this without exposing myself to the
net umprotected.
What OS is this happening to you on? Just curious.
BTW, MS knowledge base doesn't address ANY "iis services vs. XP pro" issues
that I have been able to find.
Hope this helps. I would like to explore this issue a little more via this
NG.
