Trying to install .NET to do work at home. Running XP
Pro @ home. I installed the Personal SQL server OK.

However, FPSE and IIS does not seem to be installed
correctly. I uninstalled and reinstalled IIS 5.1 a
couple of times, but the service refuses to start.

Please make recommendation.

Check %SYSTEMROOT%\iis6.log to see if you had an installation error of some
sort.

If there are any event log messages related to however you determine that
"service refuses to start" would also be useful.

Please see the posting from a few days back, where another user (including
myself) are having "issues" with the iis services on XP pro. Here was my
response to THAT post:

I have had this problem CONTINUOUSLY in XP Pro---IIS 5.1. I have uninstalled
and re-installed iis numerous times, to no avail. In my case, this problem
presents itself after a re-boot, and I can't connect to the internet (IE
6)--blank screen.

I then open services, and see iis related services (one or several) all
hung.

Happens with ALL iis related iis services (FTP, SNMP, etc), with no
particular consistancy.

I had do disable the service(s) (it let me do this while the services(s)
were hung---though I couldn't stop/start or pause), then reboot.

Then the services are, of course, disabled. It fixed it.....but at the
expense of the services being unavailable after the fact. After that,
Internet connectivity is restored in IE6.

I sit behind a router-firewall at home. I ALSO have Internet Security XP
(Symantec) on the XP box. I have a funky feeling that in my case the
Symantec Internet Securty has something to do with this.

Symantec has numerous articles on its knowledge base that indicate that IS
PROFESSIONAL is the only version supported and working on MS SERVER
software---it warns that IS XP is NOT supported on server softweare. I have
a funnier feeling that IS XP gets finnicky when you load server type snap
ins on XP Pro, as it makes XP pro behave as a server.

In order for my machine to serve up IIS on the net, I have to configure my
router for pass through to my XP box, dropping its jeans to its ankles ref
internet exposure--- THUS the double wammy on firewalls (router AND Symantec
IS). I haven't tried loading IIS and testing it with Symantec IS
uninstalled. I wouldn't know how to do this without exposing myself to the
net umprotected.

What OS is this happening to you on? Just curious.

BTW, MS knowledge base doesn't address ANY "iis services vs. XP pro" issues
that I have been able to find.

Hope this helps. I would like to explore this issue a little more via this
NG.

Is there a downloadable version of a more recent IIS
version than 5.1 that I can attempt update my version or
is that just oversimplifying everything?

I suspect the issue you state here is related to anti-virus/firewall
software that you are running on your XP machine. Such security products,
in an effort to simplify the user experience, try to make some security
decisions depend on "server" or "desktop" OS. Their "guesses" does not
necessarily match up with your actual use, so you end up having to tune it.
Of course, the annoying factor is that they do this behind your back, so on
the surface it may look like Windows just isn't working.

At the end of the day, I would suggest:
1. Run the perimeter firewall on the Router. This makes firewalls optional
on interior machines unless you want more security layers
2. If you run firewalls and other security software internally on each
machine, you have to expect to start configuring them properly to work with
any server software.

The basic problem is this -- security software cannot distinguish whether a
program opening a port on a machine is a legitimate server or a hacker
trojan. It has to take some guesses, and the probability of correct guesses
is not 100%.

Make sure that you have tcp/ip installed and configured; requried for IIS (for obvious reasons). Also the ms client bound to your network adapter, as well as
file/printer sharing.

Make sure you don't have any type of firewall, internet security, etc., type of software blocking your ports that IIS needs.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
