Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I kept getting the following error message when trying to create tables:

Can't connect to local MySQL through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

A search online yielded nothing that I thought I could do anything about
myself. The docs on this page mention nothing about script errors:

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Can_not_connect_to_server.html

I emailed my host, 1&1, twice but got no reply. Then I phoned, and the tech
support guy told me it was a script error, and there was nothing they could do.

Anyway, I got it to work by putting the connection in the same file as the
script, instead of externally. So it seems it was a script error, but why is
there nothing in the docs about it? I found plenty about MIT - pthreads, Linux
core dumps, incorrect permissions and other incomprehensible stuff. Also Mysql
might need to be reinstalled. I should explain that the script worked fine on
my local test system.

Does your host have phpMyAdmin available for you to use? Try working with
your database that way.

It really doesn't matter if it worked fine on your computer or a different
host's server - machines can be configured differently. Wink

For my needs, I always put the connection information in the scipt that's
using it. Perhaps that is normal, and that's why you don't see the error so
much?

Bet your host is running php in safe mode. Includes and requires fail
when php is running in safe mode, iirc, and I believe it is a known
bug.

If the connect stuf is built into a function and kept as an .inc and the
same with a variable file containing amounst other things, the connect vars
like u/name P/wd dbname etc once it is got working on one site it will work
correctly on all sites - only the vars then need to be changed.

Then in any scrip that needs it one only has to require say, connect.inc and
vars.php

Where vars.php has the variables changed to reflect the current site.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

This is the odd bit: in other scripts on other sites at the same host, I put
all the connection stuff in one file for simplicity, and it worked. Just this
time round there was a problem. And I pretty much copy and pasted the file, so
it wasn't that the connection scripts were different. Why it even went wrong is
a puzzle.

It's not the script itself that I'm worried about, so much as I'm wondering
whether my host could be less reliable than I thought. In other words, is their
response clueful? I don't know enough about MySQL to be able to judge.

If it works inside the script but not as an external file, perhaps your
connection file is not getting included into the main file.
How is the connection file being included? using a scripting function -
which language? or by Server Side Includes (SSI).

If SSI the line should look similar to
<!--#include virtual="myfile.inc" -->

Just a note:
Chances are, if the person is trying to connect to MySQL, it isn't going to
be an ASP file that they're calling with an include.
It is probably being called from php include();

ASP never even crossed my mind Smile
The <!--#include is SSI.
Could be using php, perl, python, c...

It was a php require();

Pixel's suggestion that it's running in safe mode is a possibility. I just wish
they would put real tech support people on the phones.

Just checked, this is not the case - php safe mode and sql.safe mode are
both turned off at 1&1.

Have to go out now but I'll look a bit further tonight when I get back.

Tested with my 1&1 account using these files and all works fine.

require.php:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<html>
<head>
<title>Untitled</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>the start</p>
<?php require("middle.inc"); ?>
<p>the end</p>
<?php
require("connect.inc");
if ($link)
echo "<p>connected</p>";
else
echo "<p>NOT connected</p>";
?>
</body>
</html>
=============================
middle.inc:

<p>the middle</p>
===============================
connect.inc:

<?php
$link = mysql_connect("mydbhostname","mydbusername","mydbpassword");
?>
===============================

results:
the start
the middle
the end
connected

Try the files on your 1&1 and let me know the outcome

Cheers,

If most of the files weren't working correctly, I would have a problem. They
are, except for this one action at this time. So it could be a glitch on a
single machine rather than something global that affects all users.

If you mean of this - possibly. If you mean a phone description of
ANY problems and it's resolution being given via phone, not so! It's
perfectly possiblw doe rwxh ro diganose and correctly determine
