Post subject: Have .com but Q about strategy for .net .org .info .biz
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I have the domain rootmode.com and I have a federally registered trademark
for rootmode with the USPTO.

I'm thinking of registering .net and .org and possibly .info and .biz to
protect the name, but where do I stop? There are tons of .tld

Should I simply not worry about anything other than .com?

There are the possible scenarios by doing this:
* someone registers another .tld and I may get some traffic by people
inadvertantly typing .com instead of the correct .tld for the other
website.
* someone commercial registers another .tld and I send a "cease and
desist" letter since I registered the trademark (of course, they would
have to be in the same line of business that I have protection in).

Or should I just spend the money to corner the market with regards to
rootmode?

All past experiences, suggestions, insights, points of view welcomed.

Thanks.

Good afternoon Mr President.

At ten bucks a throw, why not splash out on .net, .org, .biz and .info?

 > Good afternoon Mr President.

I've always wondered about capitalization of president. I have heard that
capital P denotes the President of the United States. But I don't think
it looks right if I use lowercase.

The cost for the top 5 .tlds isn't much, but where do I stop? (I'm
interpreting you answer to mean that you would stop at only getting
..com/.net/.org/.biz/.info and forget about the rest)

Get only .gtlds or also country level?
What happens when more and more .tlds are created?

Plus, is it a positive thing if someone makes a rootmode.net or
rootmode.org site that becomes popular? A certain number of people will
mistakenly put .com instead and I would gain the traffic/exposure.

It depends on the size and importance of rootmode. The bigger, the more likely
it is that someone will buy the others up and put up a site designed to
embarrass you or to capitalise on your work. Country level domains are cheaper,
so you might think about getting them for the main places you do business in.

However, the idea that people feel they have to buy all the .tlds sort of makes
a mockery of the whole naming convention thing. A .org should not be the same
as a .com or a .info.

If you are aiming at a world market, then I would imagine the top five would
be enough, otherwise as you say, where do you stop? There are literally
hundreds of country domains.

Edward,

I would at least cover .net, .org, and .biz - the problem can be (as
happened to one of my domains) that some ##%%!!! pyramid scheme or "internet
marketing" group gets one of the the top domains with the same root, and
your spillover is nastygrams. I felt I needed to respond to all of them
(even with a canned email) so people at least knew the difference.

Thanks, hadn't thought of that.
