Can anyone suggest any books, or websites on how to start a web design
company? In addition, a book or website on good web design would be
appreciated as well.

Thank you.

There wouldn't be much to read up on.

You can pretty much go 2 routes:

1) Freelance working under your name.
a) come up with "company name"
b) promote your service
c) build websites

Thats it.

The other method would be:

2) Forming a company
a) Go to your chamber of commerce
b) Do a name check
c) Pay a few bucks to reserve your company name
d) If you are going to incorporate, pick up a pack of Incorporation
Forms (CoC usually charges $10-50 for them)
i) Fill out forms
ii) Pay incorporation fee ($200-300)
iii) Wait 4-6 weeks for your Certificate of Incorporation to
arrive in the mail
e) Visit city hall and get a business license
f) Go to back and open up bank account under company name

You might be thinking "Incorporating can cost me $500+ (more if you hire a
lawyer to do your articles of incorporation), why would I do it?" and the
main answer is income tax.
Where I am, if you are a corporation and make less than $200K a year you get
a tax rate equal to about half of what you would pay if you were freelancing
or working as a non-incorporated company.

Now you might be thinking "Hey thats great! Why doesn't everybody
incorporate then?" there are a few answers to that...
First, its hard to work "under the table" as a corporation (work and not
declare the income to the government).
Also, you have to keep some basic records about your corporation and file
reports to the government about it.
And, you can't use a mailbox as your official company address... you need a
physical location. If you move around alot (even once every year or two)
this can be a pain to have to keep up.
And, if you make more than $200K a year you end up paying more taxes on the
amount over $200K than you would if you weren't a corporation (If you make
$250K in a year you'll still save money being a corporation... but if you
make like $5M a year as a corporation you'd save more if you weren't a
corporation)... Luckily there are loopholes you can use to bump that income
down (the "how do I incorporate" booklet that usually comes with the forms
usually explains how to do that too)

Thats about it in a nutshell... I'd suggest just going down to your chamber
of commerce (or whatever the like entity is in your area if you don't have
one) and ask them and pick up some information pamphlets about it

"Cascading Style Sheets The Designers Edge" by Molly E Holzschlag is a
good book on design.

As for business, talk to your bank/chamber of commerce/lawyer as
appropriate.

crikey - if nothing else does, that lot will put him/her off. I know what
you mean, but that lot all work in 'consultant' mode - they borrow your
watch to tell you the time and charge you for the information.

OR
You could move down here and register your company for $1, use a PO box as
an address and make a loss for the first 5 years (at least on paper) and get
a tax refund.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

No, you might not be able to, but the question here isn't about selling a
"good" but is about selling a service

When I started doing web design I had a laptop and an old desk in the corner
of my bedroom...

-After a couple of jobs I bought a high end PC and had a business DSL line
installed at home (static IP)

-Started doing hosting on the PC and creating websites on the laptop (I was
just hosting the websites I created... charging $25/mo to host and gave
clients 2 hrs a month of my time for free and a discount if they needed
more)

- After I had about 20 clients being hosted I moved to a 2 bedroom apartment
and set up one room as an office (wife didn't like the sound the server PC
was making all night long with its fans going)

- Teamed up with another guy who was good at sales and a whiz at graphics (I
did programming and database). We got him his own laptop and desk and set
it up in the "office" bedroom

- Wrote some custom web applications and sold them to prospective clients

- Moved into an actual "office" at long last

Being that this is a service industry... all you really need is a portable
computer and a Starbucks down the street (or somewhere recognizable that you
can meet clients and show them what you are doing... until we had the office
I used a "Bread Gardens" about 2 blocks from my apartment)

As for pizza... you could technically cook it in your home oven and sell it
to friends and neighbors<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I know not who is or is not a spammer but to respond to a request with an
offer is not spam - even in this group.

I just don't like to see it. I would never go and report him/her to their ISP.
If I asked advice in this group I would want advice, not dozerns of people
trying to make a few quid out of me.
