I cannot start my default web site as I get the
error "Address already in use". If I change the port
number it starts just fine. Now I realise something else
is probably using port 80, but how do I find out what it
is???
The server is a SBS2000 running IIS, ISA, SQL, Exchange,
etc.

Luke,
It sounds like you have multiple sites, trying to use the same ports,
parsing on the same url header. For multiple ports, either they each need to
use a different URL header or a different port. Typically, external sites
get set up with different domain names on the same IP address all using port
80. Internal sites, just for the company or office use a different port
than the standard port 80; security by obscurity.
hope this helps,
Jay

Hi Luke,
You might try opening a command prompt and then typing in the following command:
netstat -ano > C:\stat.txt
Then on the command line run the following command:
Notepad C:\stat.txt
Review the entries that are associated to port 80. The column to the far right is the Process ID (PID) Use task manger to display the list of running
processes. You may have to add the PID column. This can be accomplished by selecting <view>, <select columns>, click the check box next to the PID
(Process ID). No you can see what processes are listening on port 80.
Thank You. I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks for all the advice. I think that netstat command is exactly what I
need, but -o is not a valid switch in my version. I am running SBS2000. I am
also not running any other sites (all are stopped) so that is not the
problem. If I change the port to 81 or any other port, it starts just fine.
So there is obviously something else using port 80 which is not allowing IIS
to use it for that site. Therefore I am trying to track whatever that is
down. The problem seemed to occur after running Internet Connection Wizard
as I wanted to enable OWA.
Below are all the lines that contain port 80 (from the netstat -an) in one
way or another.

Hi Luke,
Looks like on of the additional server products you have installed is grabbing port 80. I would look at the ISA server specifically since it wants to act like a
firewall/proxy. If you have access to a Windows 2003 system the netstat in that version supports the "o" argument. From what you have posted it looks like
you have two nics or two IPs in this system. The ip 80.176.247.186 looks to be your public IP. I would configure my ISA to listen on that IP for the incomming
requests. The IIS server I would bind to the internal non-routable IP 192.168.xxx.yyy. Give that a try.
Thank You. I hope this information is helpful.

Hi Dan
Yes you're right. ISA server seems to be the culprit.
ISA server was configured the way you recommended but I
had a tick in the "Auto Discovery" option which was
listening on port 80. Stopped that and everything now
works fine. I ticked it as I thought this would mean
staff would not have to manually fill in the proxy
settings in their Internet Connection Settings. Is that
what it was for? Could it be configured differently so
they can all live harmoniously?
Anyway,
Thanks for you advice and time. Probably wouldn't have
got their otherwise.
Cheers
Luke

Hi Luke,
Glad to hear you underway! I am uncertain whee you are setting the tick mark. Is this in ISA or IIS?? Let me know..
Thank You. I hope this information is helpful.

| Hi Dan
|
| Yes you're right. ISA server seems to be the culprit.
| ISA server was configured the way you recommended but I
| had a tick in the "Auto Discovery" option which was
| listening on port 80. Stopped that and everything now
| works fine. I ticked it as I thought this would mean
| staff would not have to manually fill in the proxy
| settings in their Internet Connection Settings. Is that
| what it was for? Could it be configured differently so
| they can all live harmoniously?
|
| Anyway,
|
| Thanks for you advice and time. Probably wouldn't have
| got their otherwise.
|
| Cheers
|
| Luke
