Howdy Tom,

Hong Kong is loaded with opportunities if you can afford some good web
design and commercial quality hosting.

Unless things have changed radically since the last time I was in Hong Kong
you live in one of the busiest import/export cities in the world. Get out
on the streets and find stores that would like to present their products
on-line. Start making some arrangments so you have good products to offer.

Hi Thomas,

To start your online business, first you will need to know if you plan
to sell products or advertising online.

There are a number of Payment Gateways you can choose from which dont
necessary have to come from HK. eg: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.worldpay.com" target="_blank">www.worldpay.com</a> or for an even
more affordable payment gateway, you can use <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.paypal.com" target="_blank">www.paypal.com</a> ..

Ofcourse, setting up the payment gateway will require you to know how
many orders you expect or how much you are willing to spend.

The same goes for Web Hosting and domain name registration.

If you require special rates on web hosting, just let me know, ill be
more that glad to help you out.

Kind Regards
David

Hey Tom, let me be more clear,

You don't need to much money to start business online…
You need:
1)website
2)a shopping cart (more info below)
3)a ssl certificate
4)a payment gateway
5)a merchant account
6)a business checking account

Then you are set. So lets delineate…
1) website… You need a website where you advertise and let the
costumer learn about your product. A website must have 1) a hosting
company, this is the place that your actually website information will
be stored for the whole world to see. This can cost anywere from $2 to
$1000 dollars depending what features you want. I would use aabox.com
since they offer and amazing shopping cart program, but I will tell
you more below 2) a registered domain name. You can pick your name,
ex. Dogtoys.com or computerparts.net, and register it at godaddy.com
for about $20 a year. 3) an actuall website, which you design yourself
with a site building program, hire someone to do that for you.
2) Shopping cart….This gets really tricky since there are so many
options out their. A shopping cart is a program that is usually
hosted on your. The most popular commercial shopping cart, which a
host will offer, is Miva, but I don't recommend that. Miva is very
stable and popular, but very limited, and you usually don't get tech
support with it. Aabox.com is superior (according to the research I
have spent hours and days on) to any company that I have seen for the
price. Aabox.com is a hosting company that will install oscommerce
ms2-max (shopping cart software) to your site, all you have to do is
put in your products, preferences and so on. If you want options, go
with aabox.com, If you appreciate this information, follow this link
so they know I sent you
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.aabox.com/cgi-bin/affiliate/clickthru.cgi?id=Adam" target="_blank">http://www.aabox.com/cgi-bin/affiliate/clickthru.cgi?id=Adam</a>
3) Ssl certificate- ssl (secure socket layer) is a security measure
that makes your site very safe so your customers can input their
credit cart information without any hackers spying on them. Verisign
is the most popular, but very expensive. If you host with aabox.com,
they provide a ssl certificate for you. That is a big money saver.
4) Payment gateway- this is optional, but this allows your website to
automatically approve or disapprove a credit card payment before any
transaction occurs. I am not well versed in this area, but right now
I am with onlinedatacorp.com, who provides a payment gateway to
approve the transaction, then a merchant account the receive the
payment.
5) Merchant account- this is a virtual account, kinda. It receives
the credit card information, and gets the money, then transfers that
to your buisiness checking account. So money only stays in your
merchant account for about 2 days. They usually charge a percent of
each transaction. A good percentage for online payemtn is about 2.4%,
don't go much higher then that.
6) Business account- this is your already existing account that
receives the money from your merchant account.
And ther you go. That how to make an online business. Check out
mine, which is hosted at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.aabox.com," target="_blank">www.aabox.com,</a> sermonspice.com
Hope I can help,
Adam

Hey,

E-commerce can be a real pain to set up. When I first set mine up, it
took me a couple of months because I was just going around in circles
from one company to another. Just to give you some direction, I got
my SSL certificate from Commodo because they were the cheapest I
found. I have heard good things about Geotrust SSL certs also, but
they were a little bit higher priced. I used Zeebold.com for my
merchant account. They can actually set up SSL certs, payment
gateways, and merchant accounts for you, but I already had my SSL, so
I didn't need that. Email me if you want the contact info for my sales
rep at Zeebold. For the shopping cart, I used x-cart.com. They are
pretty cheap and easily implementable.

You might also want to check out different hosting companies. Some
hosting companies offer SSL certificates on their shared or dedicated
hosting packages. Some also have merchant accounts and shopping cart
features already so you don't have to do as much legwork. Hope this
helps.

I totally agree with you. It's really a pain
Especially when you work alone and have very limited budget.

Okay now this is to everyone, I understand the pain part, I'm trying
to get an e-commerce site moving, the site is built, I use pay pal for
payment, so they have the ssl certificates, and I have the product.
My question is this, how much advertising and leg work is required to
get noticed and start getting valid traffic. Please don't anybody say
anything about traffic swarm or anything like it. That may get hits
but in my opinion that is not valid traffic. I will gladly post the
site if requested and always accept constructive criticism. I know
that I need to work on my link exchange and that is in progress. I
hope to have that fixed to include more content and relating the links
beter. Beyond that please let me know, hint, tips, step by step how
to's Thanks in advance.

Earl

Hi Earl,

I have my online store since March 04. At the beginning I tried my
best to submit my site to almost every search engines in the world and
study how to become the first to be listed. Now, after 2 months (two
weeks ago), my site is listed at the first page of both Google and
Yahoo by two of the keywords (F1 M......s or F1 P......s).

Do you think I got a lot of traffic? Yes, I got more than before,
around 20% more. I put adv. on Local TV (once only) and national
newspaper (twice) and I got orders as well. But the traffic and orders
are still far below my expectation. I don't know why.

I think the only reason could be the prices. As everyone can
check/compare the prices easily. They just choose the cheapest one and
it doesn't matter where is the site as they have to pay the
transportation anyway.

But it still can not completely explain why the traffic is low.
Because if there is high traffic buy no orders, then means the prices
are high. In my case, just no one visit my site, why? No demand?

Jim
