Man, I love having broadband.....I've patiently waited for aaaages and
aaaaages for it, and all the time I was on dialup, I was always thinking
"Oooh, I'll come back to that site once I get broadband"......Now I've got
it, I have no idea what to download, or what sites to go look at....LOL

I remember how that feels; happened to me 8 months ago Smile
It's just too quick. Things used to take ages, and now the
whole list of 'sites to visit once I get broadband' is done
in half an hour. Nothing left to do...
But don't be sad, you'll get used to it soon enough...
Having your newsreader pick up messages every 2 minutes
already helps some Wink

Just wait until you've gotten used to it, then you jump over to Mom's for a
week-long holiday. Checking e-mail takes eons and you're never more grateful
for your broadband when you return!

First thing I did was go to Jasc Software and download Paint Shop Pro.
I did it once on dial up and it took so long I went to take a nap...

That was the test of my new speed for me. Smile If I remember right it
took less than 30 minutes to get it with my new connection Smile

The novelty soon wears off. Trust me, there's only so much crap you can
find to download, and after that 512kbps+ seems a bit overkill for
checking Usenet Smile

Of course, when it comes to Windows updates, or downloading the latest
Linux kernel, BB is a blessing and I couldn't do without it!

Shame I'm going to lose it for a while next month Sad

Right on the button. My 'kits' directory is now almost non-existant.

Resilience mostly. The first is on a cable network, the second is via the
local telephone exchange.

Cable DSL has been fine up till now, delivering all I need with only a few
glitches. Unfortunately those outages are always (you can guarantee it)
during the working day. Another, independent. DSL makes more economic sense
than a dedicated link (leased line)

That's the business case ;o)

I started looking around at other providers because cable won't/can't
deliver static ip-addresses at a reasonable cost. I've found a DSL supplier
that will let me have as many as I can shake a stick at. So now I have a
proper DMZ I can build a staging area for client side projects and migrate
my intranet to an extranet - the TOS/AUP allows me to run any sort of server
I choose with some minor caveats - no illegal, spam or netbios traffic. I
may even investigate running my own local mail server if I get a minute.

Now then, anyone got a spare router with least cost routing and fall-back
capabilities?

The production servers will stay out in the real world - even more
connected - where they belong.

Or, as in my case, your money diet includes de-evolving to dialup. It's
not a pleasant sacrifice Sad
