If you folks could have a look in your spare time I'd appreciate it.

http://www.customcrosses.com/

Also, I've done a lot of designing over the years for a lot of projects, but
I rarely if ever did websites commercially. I'm really trying to get a
handle on what I should charge for this site. On top of that, the owner
would like me to handle the promotion such as Google etc. What does one
charge, say for instance monthly, for this as well as what services should
be included? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks for your time and help. If I've come to the wrong place to ask this,
please tell me. And, if you know where to go, please include it.

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Ed

I'm posting after having read eight articles in this thread by you, Duende
and GreyWyvern. The marquee is still up and oscillating. I never did see
the counter. I'm using IE5 on a Mac at 640x480.
The gold arrow points on your navigation buttons indicate to me that the
individual nav buttons contain sub menus. If they do, I can't see them.
The main logo is 760px wide and uses 56k of memory. I have to scroll to
see the right hand side of the site. The main content is contained in a
narrow strip in the center of the page until the picture of the "John Doe"
cross comes up. Then the main textual content inconveniently expands under
the graphic to become unreadable. Now lets try it in Mozilla.
The main content appears to flow correctly around the cross. I still have
the scroll, of course, because of your wide header graphic.
It's not as bad as I expected in Lynx Wink Not good, but not as bad as I
expected. Learn to use the "alt" attribute for images.
To be as kind as I'm able, your site probably looks great on browsers that
support it at window sizes larger than 800px.
My quick suggestions:
use "alt" on images
reduce the width of the header image and optimize it for size
optimize all other images for size as well
lose the marquee
I didn't see the counter but lose it if it's there
I don't have a suggestion for the image-over-text on IE5 other than, from
memory, position elements don't work well on IE5 Mac.

Long term suggestions:
Learn "Any Size Design"
Don't use your current tools for designing websites.

Okay, first off, counters are token amateur.

Secondly, in an indirect way, having a counter on a site selling memorials
for the deceased is in very bad taste. "436 people who recently lost a
loved one have visited this site!" That's not something you should be
proud of...

Thirdly, (and nothing to do with webmastering) don't *PUSH* items that
represent loss. "CAN BE CUSTOMIZED TO FIT YOUR SPECIFICATIONS!" is good.
"*** SPECIAL DISCOUNT FOR BULK ORDERS ***" is bad and sounds like
you're trying to take advantage of an earthquake somewhere. In *both*
cases though, the ALL CAPS sounds pushy. I know most of that is your
customer's (site owner's) domain, but still...

It's apparent it was designed with the idea that a webpage somehow equals
a piece of paper, when really it's a much more dynamic medium.

Don't justify text. People think justifying text makes it look cool, like
in a book. The truth is, that's the only place it works. Especially on
this type of site, where leaving the text to flow will make the page feel
"looser" and more comfortable.

The logo strip is too big and is off center for me.

That's just my impression of the page itself. I don't look at code unless
it's hand made.

Thank you Grey! I'll implement this tonight. Didn't realize that about
counters, and yes, I suppose it does sound bad. I'll get rid of the Caps,
also, the bulk order thing was directed at pet stores oddly enough, though I
hadn't thought about how it sounds to someone who lost someone, thanks. I
also didn't realize that about justification. I'll fix it. As for the logo,
reckon I've been a bit too proud of it. Again, thanks. Got any ideas about
costs?

You need to det rid of that marquee. Watching ti for a bit could put you
in need of one of your crosses.

Not to bad looking for a site done in microsoft-com:office:

It's a marquee? Really? Opera turns those things off for me Smile And it's
lucky they do, I would've hit harder on that than the counter. It's a
business for selling memorials, not a casino!

I disagree with Gray about your logo because it shows the produce rather
well but it would be nice if the site wasn't a fixed width.

No, CHARGE this. I'm trying to cost this out tomorrow, along with signs and
computer repair etc. (trying to get to Daytona this week for the race,
that's why the rush). I really don't know what to charge, plus I need to
know how to charge the client for monthly services, though I expect most of
that to be keeping his site at the top of various lists (something I expect
Google will charge me for anyway). Please help.

Quite Smile Although there's still scrollbars at 800x600, the site looks
more professional now at least.
