I was looking to have some websites brightened up a bit .
Asked for a quote for single page , no flash and reutilising
6 logos as a starting point . The reply was 170 GBP + vat

I am sure they would do a great job but at 200 a page its out my budget .

i am sure somewhere there was a site you could put little jobs out to tender
and webbies would reply ..any ideas .

part of th prob is not sure exactly what i want so that doesnt help....
suppose I am looking for ideally few guys to throw rough concept together
utilising their own ideas and I choose one that imapcts me best ...is this
unfair ?
is this type of "tender " service available

Biggest prob i can see with that would be if you like one aspect of one idea
and
one aspect of another ..?

Appreciate thoughts

Most designers I know charge at least £100 an hour. 6 pages could
easily take 2 hours, but it really depends on what is needed.

Exactly, and my rates drop a lot if a client is paying for a large
chunk of work. I prefer to charge for X number days work instead. But
if I'm charging per-hour, that means uninterupted dedication to that
client for that time, and that costs money as it's hard work.

It's not just me you pay for anyway; I have a state-of-the-art studio
at home for video editing and web work.

I have one client who happily pays $1300 a month just to have me on
call at the moment. Usually works out about 3-4 hours work a month.

Who the hell is still getting to charge £100/hour ? You didn't need to
pay that, even back in '99

I had a call this morning about a job at £180/day, which I thought was
pretty good money for plain HTML (It's in Watford though)

For one page that's not enough - however, adding additional pages should
take no more than a few moments each.
