Not exactly. I assume you are using Windows XP Pro, but in a workgroup. In
that configuration "Use Simple File Sharing" option is turned on. When you
use that option, and you choose to create a web share, a virtual directory
is created in IIS. However if you disable Simple File Sharing (in Explorer
goto Tools -> Folder Options -> uncheck Use Simple File Sharing) then shares
and virtual directories are no longer necessarily linked. You can create any
arbitrary virtual directory in IIS Manager MMC Console
