Post subject: Request for setting up secure access to documents
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I received this request from a family member and I don't know the best
way of going about getting this set up. I have done some web design
and in the past have worked as a programmer on mainframes, this in no
way qualifies me to do this kind of work. I told her however that I
would see what I could find out.

She needs a web site with ftp access for multiple clients. The site
needs to be secured with at least 128 bit encryption.

Does anyone here have any recommendations on the best way to set this
up? I have set up a shopping cart using a shared SSL but I know
nothing about secure ftp. Can anyone here recommend a good web host
for something like this?

I appreciate any help I can get concerning this.

If the documents she is distributing are THAT sensitive, she should not put
them on a shared server.

These two statements contradict each other. FTP in an inherantly insecure
protocol. Try SFTP, SCP or (my personal favourite) Rsync-over-SSH instead.

Better to use your own SSL certificate rather than a shared
one. Looks more professional for starters.

All you need is a good host that will help you through the
process. To be reasonably secure you need to have your own
unique IP and a site area secure from others on the same
server as well as an authenticated security certificate for
your named site.

We can provide all that for you but I cannot recommend
ourselves.

I would instead recommend that you check out a non - web
hosts forum, and see what the participants have to say about
setting up SSL and hosts support etc. While it is a relative
easy thing to set up some hosts with less experience can do
it badly. They usually get a mention in the forums:-)

The ideal for you would be a host that can provide the
certificate and set it up for you as well as walk you
through the process.

never work for a family member it'll only go very wrong. you may not
think so now but in 6 months time when you're in the middle of nowhere
digging a shallow grave for your once beloved family member you'll
remember this post so i'd just like to say - "i told you so" and
"another foot should be deep enough".

what everyone else said and she should be aware that people may not have
an ftp client that supports SSL
