Hello, I will have a software product in the next six months on the
market. I want to have a demo version on my site for people to
download, also an option for them to download the full version. It will
be fairly large. I also already get a lot of traffic. Is there a
hosting company that offers un limited monthly traffic usage? Any
ideas? Right not I have 1and1. Thanks, Mark

Newbie Bait?

Offer it? Sure.
Can they deliver it? Impossible
There is no Unlimited, Infinity or Mobius theory associated with this
at all.
And unlimited in a shared environment? Ha!
Don't fall for Newbie Bait.

Traffic is bandwidth and bandwidth costs pesos.
Buy what you think you need. If you need more, get more.

Or you'll probably get mixed up in the " I didn't read the small print
", " Can I have my site back ", routine that will surely follow.

Yes, there are any number of providers that offer "unlimited"
bandwidth. I am currently with all2host.net, but I am considering
moving due to intermittant poor service and support. I can't complain
about the cost and they have never made an issue with my heavy traffic
up to 350 GB/mo. My traffic is high because I host gnuarm.com which
offers very large tool files for developing embedded software. Being
free, it gets downloaded a lot.

Of course as many here will tell you, there is no such thing as
"unlimited" traffic. But clearly if they claim "unlimited" they will
not cap you at the sort of numbers that other providers do. On the
other hand, I have seen affordable plans that offer up to 1000 GB/mo of
traffic. Do you really expect to have more than that?

1) This was my first post so I am a new, thanks!
2) I get about 5000 unique visits a day now: I think my full version
will be 700 mb and my demo 15 mb. So I do not know what I will need.
Its a multimedia foreign language learning program.
3) All advice is welcome as I do not know if 1and1(my current host) is
the most economical? I try to look arround but its a maze of terms and
conditions etc so I thought I would ask here with what people like.
4) I was thinking of having 1and1 for my mainpage as I have no problem
with them, then use some cheap one for my downloads. Even if the
service is iffy as it could be simply for downloading.

Thanks!

There is no such thing as "unlimited traffic".

"unmetered" or "uncapped" would be more accurate advertising.

It's like advertising a car with "unlimited mileage". That's only true
if you have a VERY LONG gas (petrol) hose.

From my own experiences, you will need a dedicated server. Otherwise,
the spikes in transfer when you have several people downloading
simultaneously will seriously impact on the other sites hosted on the
server, and bring the host down on you like a rhino on heat <g>

As for transfer (bandwidth) this is more complex. Talk to a host and
they will explain why it's not so much how much you use over a month,
but the spikes or data rate that are more relevant.

Some hosts throttle the maximum rate, I think (that's THINK as in I
may be wrong) that tera-byte.com may throttle the peaks.

They certainly offer 500gB a month with a dedicated server, worth
talking to them.

"Unlimited" simply means that there's no contract cap on usage. But
there's still a physical limit to the number of bytes you can squeeze
down the wire (or fibre, or whatever) that the server is connected to,
and on a multi-user system then that available data has to be shared
among all the hosted sites. If you have a lot of users accessing large
files at the same time then transfer rates will slow down and traffic
usage will effectively be self-limiting. And, of course, excessive
traffic adds load to the server and that, too, slows down response
times and hence limits traffic.

So all that "unlimited" means in marketing terms is that the host will
let you thrash your site to death without imposing a transfer cap if
you do. It doesn't provide any guarantee that your site will survive
being slashdotted or DDOSed. The practical upper limit on an
"unlimited" host may well be lower than on a capped service where the
SLA guarantees that you will actually be allowed to use all of it.

Without knowing more about the license of your software, I can't really
say, but there may be third-party sites (a la Version Tracker) where you
could post your demo version. Then, just get a regular hosting account
for your site, and link to the third-party site for downloading. There's
certainly no shame in this; lots of quality products are distributed in
this manner, and it will save you a ton of headaches (not to mention money).

You could always host the full version on another host - RapidShared, max
300 mb or MegaUpload, 250 mb spring to mind.

Have you considered bittorrent by the way? If your full version is a paid
version, you can still use bittorrent for the demo version.
