There's no better FTP search, I'll give it that.

The technical axiom that nothing is impossible sinisterly implies the

Meh. It's not bad, but at least I now know who has been sending visitors
to pages I removed from my site over a year ago!

If that's the criterium, I'm going with Google (puts me first;
alltheweb puts me fourth...).

I question the very idea of "a better search engine"
there are different types of search for different purposes...we need to
get away from the idea of a one size fits all search engine and start
looking at different search engines for different purposes
once upon a time one could use Lycos to find the most popular site for a
particular search term, Infoseek would show you the most academically
reliable sites, and Northern Light would give a load of up to the minute
references...now all we get is Google and various sub-Googles all trying
to produce the same result
I think it's a complete misunderstanding of how we use search engines
caused by all the discussion being between the operators of search engines
and the owners and builders of web sites, and little input from the people
who merely want to find the right sight for each particular search they
make
the only SE that seems to have recognised this is Northern Light, who now
largely operate as a subscription service for professional
researchers...giving a set of search results that are biased in a
predictable way is a good thing...to the extent that many are willing to
pay for it
Alltheweb/FAST and Google are very good and all that...I'd just rather
have access to something DIFFERENT rather than a bunch of almost identical
services

Only problem with this is most new users use the first search engine they
see (which is usually where their browser's search button takes them). They
later discover some other search engine (like Google) and religiously use
that one.
To get everyone to use search engines for different purposes, the search
engines would have to partner up and develop a search engine directory
letting people know which search engine to use for what they want to do.
People are too dang impatient to learn the faster or more productive way of
doing things.

That's all fine and dandy, and they seem to provide rellevant results
(considering I get some pretty good listings for my key-words) but... How
come I never see them as a refferer in my logs. Maybe 1 to 10 hits a month,
compared with the 1000's I am getting with google. I say whoever is giving
me the most traffic is the best.

Google, Inktomi and FAST already exist...yet Wisenut and Teoma start up
and attack exactly the same market...everyone moans about Google's
"monopoly"...Ask and Lycos spend masses on TV ads to advertise that they
have a second rate version of something most people already have access to
isn't it just possible that a better approach might be to market a niche
search engine?...loads of people use specialist directories for specialist
subjects...the consumer can be quite sophisticated...there just isn't
anything to choose from at present

Alltheweb is a test bed for FAST...FAST provide search technology to a
number of portals, especially in Europe...you'll see the FAST results
under a range of referrers, just not labelled as FAST
if you are getting 1000s a week from Google then you are probably getting
100-200 a week from the various FAST offerings...probably many more if
your site is multilingual or targeting specific European countries
you don't need to do anything regarding FAST that you don't do already for
Google...both spider thoroughly and base their algorithms on similar
factors...last I looked Google is a tad more interested in domain name and
inbound links, and FAST more on page content...generally sites that do
well on one do well on both
