Post subject: maybe OT ... does IIS run on win XP media edition?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I am trying to find a new laptop, most have XP Home and I need IIS to
develop (well, yeah ... duh) and I've looked everywhere. It seems I can
find some reasonable laptops with the Media version of XP, but I cannot
find out if IIS runs on any of them. Help?

It seems that most laptops have XP Home and few of them will allow the
installation of a commercial upgrade. Any suggestions?

I develop data-driven websites with .net, classic ASP and SQL Server 2k
.... I test them locally (with IIS) before uploading them for client
evaluation.

I use Dreamweaver for Classic ASP and Visual Web Developer Express 2005
for .net. VWD has its own 'server' but VWD is already a resource-hog and
even with 1 gig of memory on an AMD 3Ghtz running XP Pro ... (and email,
and newsreader and all the other TSRs that load up) the poor ol' system
just starts to wheeze ... IIS is already resident ... so IIS is the
test platform of convenience ...

So, in answer to your question ... what else other than IIS?

Not tried it myself yet but, Apache::ASP was reccomended by a friend around
a week or so ago.......... might be worth looking at.

The whole response is OT.

I'm curious. Why would you suggest to use a different web server when the
OP is completely a MSFT shop? You're introducing a foreign element. You
responded on a MSFT news site, in an IIS NG, with a question of can't you
use something other than IIS.

Are you aware Apache does not natively support ASP? There is Chili!Soft
from Sun and a port for Apache using PerlScript, NOT VBscript or
J(ava)script.

This is from their main web page:
Apache::ASP provides an Active Server Pages port to the Apache Web Server
with Perl scripting only.

The "Perl scripting only" part sounds pretty definite, at least to me.

If your goal is to move people away from MSFT products, perhaps an anti-MSFT
newsgroup would be a better venue for it, perhaps something with
"opensource" in the name?!

If I went to a Chevy dealership to buy a new Corvette and the British
salesman's first response was, "Can't you buy a foreign job?" I'd pull off
my belt, wrap it around my hand, buckle across my knuckles and smack him,
leaving an imprint of "Don't mess with Texas!" across his forehead that
could he read in the mirror each mornin' as he was gettin' ready for work.
Jes' sayin'...mate!

hehe, my intent wasn't to drive anyone away from anywhere. I simply
mentioned it as an alternative (I know you can use IIS on Home/Pro etc, but
not sure about Media so figured it couldn't hurt to ask).

As for Apache::ASP, as I said, I've not tried it myself, so wasn't aware of
the things you mentioned.

hehe, if PerlScript is anywhere as close to confusing as Perl itself, I want

Now you don't get to test your PerlScript abilities. It only takes one to

XP Pro runs on every new laptop I've seen. Why not ask the
manufacturer if they sell it with XP Pro? Most do since the same
laptop gets used in the business world, and XP Home is useless in a
networked environment.

FWIW, all HP, Dell, IBM, Toshiba, Panasonic and Gateway laptops have
XP Pro available.
