Post subject: IIS won't run after power fail
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Whilst moving the office around I accidently (and stupidly) killed the power to my 2k workstation which is acting as a temporary intranet server. Now when I try to access the intranet I get the default IE page - can not find the server etc. I've checked in Inetput wwwroot and the pages are there and o.k. I'm getting event log messages such as :

The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service terminated with the following error:
The data area passed to a system call is too small.

The FTP Publishing Service service terminated with the following error:
The data area passed to a system call is too small.

Unable to collect the FTP performance statistics. The error code returned by the service is data DWORD 0.

Unable to query the IIS Info service performance data. The error code returned by the service is data DWORD 0.

I guess these are all part of the problem but I don't know how to resolve them Sad

Any advice very much apreciated.

Gareth

Are the appropriate services started? WWW, IISADMIN etc...

Also, the actual exact error message (from the browser)
would be helpful...

All the relevant services are started as far as I can
see. The browser error is the standard IE one "The page
cannot be displayed" that you would get if looking for a
webpage that doesn't exsist.

If I go into Internet Services Manager on the PC and
double click it says it can't connect to the machine
either.

Did you try stopping and restarting the services in the
services MMC? And as I said earlier, the exact error
message from the browser would be helpful. Page cannot be
displayed is very generic and can be caused by a million
different things. Also, turn off friendly error messages
in your browser...so we can see the real error.

I have stopped and started the IIS admin service. I can't
start the SMTP or FTP publishing services (if I need them)
as it returns a "Can not start the service (Which ever one
you try)on local computer. Error 122: The data area
passed to a system call is too small.
I turned off friendly error messages in the browser and
here is the full error message :

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The
Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or
you may need to adjust your browser settings.

-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make
sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab,
click Settings. The settings should match those provided
by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft
Windows can examine your network and automatically
discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the
Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to
determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your
Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu,
and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab,
scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL
2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

I get this if I try to access it through my own PC which
is the host or any other PC on the network.

I'm grateful of any advice anyone can offer.

Thanks

Have you stopped and started the World Wide Web
Publishing Service? You may also have a corrupt
metabase.bin file. Do you have a backup copy of it? If
you do, you may want to replace the one on your system
with the backup copy...
