Unless I'm mistaken, it should be possible to prevent access to a website by
placing some special sort of file in the root of the website that does the
trick.

Can anybody provide a link to the source that documents this?

Thank you.

You are thinking of .htacess. A file that only exists on Apache and other
Unix based OSS web servers.

IIS does not use it.

You can, however, emulate that type of access using a tool called
"IISPassword" (free from troxo). Once you have it set up and configured you
can make the .htpasswrd file and .htacess file editiable by the owner of the
site to modify access.

You will need to have access to the server to install the software though.

I'm not aware of such a file.

There exists a file called robots.txt that is requested by legitimate search
engines/spiders. Those robots will honour directives in such a file (e.g. do
not index files in a certain location). Non-legitimate spiders will simply
ignore such directives.

Cheers
Ken

No. I know of ".htaccess".

Before I posted my question, I had spent many hours reading about IIS,
Asp.Net, and how they work together. In one of the documents, there was a
simple and clever example of achieving, as it were, the effect of
".htaccess". As this wasn't the goal of my exploration, I thought I'd go
back to the trick later. Now I regret I didn't make a note of the document.
