Howdy,
If you are talking about getting to the top with keywords like "shoe store"
it is nothing but pure dumb luck. Searching for a complete domain name will
just about always end up on top.
The web crawlers have gotten very efficient lately so there's no rocket
science involved. If you do a good job getting the meta tags in the heading
to match the purpose of a web page and get the most important text at the
top, that page will get indexed fairly quickly. Working your way to the top
can take many months carefully building exchange links with quality sites.
BTW, don't fall for the "Link Farm" hype. They are more likely to push you
to the bottom on the major search engines like Google.
