If anyone is using or has used pop-under ads to generate site income
recently, I'd be interested to hear their opinions on whether they are worth
while venture for a daily 5K Unique IP site. Or has that bubble burst too
Surprisedp

Thanks.

Since I installed the advanced Google Toolbar about three weeks ago,
it has blocked 445 popups. I hit one site (conforums.com) that had the
nerve to redirect to a page with the warning "Popup killer detected!
Disable your popup killer immediately, or you will see this message on
every page you access on our site!" I opted instead to put those
morons on my browsing shitlist, and advised them of my decision. I see
that they have since dropped the arrogant "All your base are ours"
attitude. I'm of the opinion that my view of popups is shared
universally, outside of web site marketing departments.

Or the site's URL goes to localhost, and the webmaster gets a
nastygram from me. X-10 did it; Created Zero Tolerance.
Thank them.
Classmates.com dropped one on my screen once.
I have no idea if they exist anymore. I'll never see them.
Had some interesting e-mail exchanges with my local weather channel

Popups are probably less popular than spam. AOL 8 comes with a popup-killer, so
a large section of the surfing public will not even see them. That should tell
you something.

You are talking about pop unders yes? I ask, because people have
started ranting about pop-ups and spam, oh well...

Yes they do generate income for my site, and when the whole world
turns them off and the income dries up, then my site will be become
subscription only, which should tell you something about commercial
web sites....

Of the millions of visitors The Probert Encyclopaedia receives
(honestly) only one or perhaps two have ever complained about the
pop-unders we use, perhaps because they are fairly discreet.

I just wonder when people will learn Alice.

I have written to a number of sites about their use of pop-ups. I recently
cancelled my account with htmlgear after years of good service, because they
started using pop-ups on guestbooks.

I avoid sites like geocities users, because I know I will get bombarded with
the things etc etc.

NO surfer wants them or asks for them. EVERYONE knows how despised they
are. Yet still we see them.

I never see them, Matt. Firebird [or IE] with Googlebar. I don't do
that to cheat anyone or anything ... but I don't pay attention to
advertising anyway, even on TV and in the paper, so what's the point in
aggravating myself? Or leaving myself open to the hanger-ons who still
use the looping popup porno windows?

Pop-unders seem kind of useless. But I don't mind them much. Pop-ups,
on the other hand, are likened to salesfolk jumping out and getting in
your face with a big placard and blocking your view while you
windowshop.

That's precisely what they are Judy. The pop-under is where the salesman
slips the leaflet into your pocket, but you don't notice it 'til you get
home.
