A client cannot access webmail or member area with username password

Two servers,
1. UnixBSD No control panel ProgrammeA with password username access works
fine in both IE6 and NS 7.1

2. Linux Cpanel ProgrammeA with password username access does not work
User simply gets taken back to the login page and told password username
details are wrong.

Using NS all works fine, username password accepted

Using IE 6 Password access not working.

IE also fails on 2 when trying to use webmail, squirrel horde etc (error
message here is wrong session cookie id - which means it could be wrong or
it does not exist)

PhP.ini on both machines is much the same - sessions and cookies settings
are identical and both use the same version of mysql

It looks to me like a session / cookie problem except it is only a problem
with the cpanel / IE combination - works fine with cpanel / NS combination

And it is only a problem with password / username login

All other areas using sessions and cookies work fine - shoping kart etc.

Anyone come across anything similar?
Any idea's?

Any one got a drink? I need something Sad(

I got this from my host this morning:

If you are using Internet Explorer, with the latest Microsoft upgrade
patch, you may experience login difficulties with Cpanel, WHM, Webmail
and other non-yourhost login screens.

We've since modified the login form on our main page with a temporary
fix, and are developing a better login system. We hope to that the new
login system in place, as well as a new and centralized "Members Area"
webpage, very soon.

The best way to log in to a specific cpanel account on a specific server,
right now, is to use a url in the form:
http://USERNAME.SERVERNAME.cpanel.yourhost.com/ - substituting in the
actual username and servername

As far as browsers, you might wish to consider a recent version of
Mozilla. We highly recommend Mozilla and most of our staff wouldn't dream
of using anything else. See http://mozilla.org/ for more information.

Main reasons people can't log into Cpanel: 1. Browser security settings,
in IE, are set to "HIGH". 2. Accessing from behind a network firewall that
blocks Cpanel ports. 3. The latest Microsoft security patch disallows a
common way to log into Cpanel (and webmail from within Cpanel), with IE.

what ports does Cpanel need that other websites manage without?

> 3. The latest Microsoft

is a bug in Cpanel or maybe a design flaw

If the IE user really does trust Cpanel and the host not to screw with
his/her workstation then the URL can be added to the list of 'trusted'
sites, but this is only to be recommended as a short term solution as it
can/will cause many visitors to question whether they want to deal with a
web company that can't get its head round simple web technologies.

Cpanel need to address these issues - unfortunately they are not the only
one.

btw: anyone used IE on a Win2k3 server? it's closed up tighter than a ducks
arse. I hope the next desktop o/s is released with a similarly configured
browser.

Geat stuff - for the site owner - but what about the ordinary visitor? One
of the 90% plus who use IE . How would they know the servername, username or
even that they have to use that stuff to get into a password area.

OK problem solved Smile))

Turns out it was a cookie thing. IE 6 is apparently VERY strict on cookies
and refuses to accept 3rd party cookies from not known sites - EVEN when
security is set low and accept ALL cookies is set.

The only good thing is the forced overide does work but it means a site will
either need to put a sign up telling visitors what to do - OR perhaps a
better option would be if all issued cookies contained a privacy policy -
then it would not be an issue

I know it was a PITA for you but in general refusing 3rd party cookies is a
good thing (tm). There aren't many valid reasons for using them in the
first place. The most used usage is to collect demographic and site usage
info.

I spent a whole day stripping down a server, looking for gremlins that didnt
exist - thanks MS! (try doing that from 12,000 miles away Smile - <the
stripping bit>

Unfortunately, the site uses cookies to store the session id to validate
client access - I know, it might be someone else loging on but that is their
lookout.
Forms collect client data in the first place, the cookies are part of the
security thing. Funny thing is, it is all part of the clearly laid out
privacy policy which IE6 said the site didnt have - go figure.

Thats what I thought, until I discovered NS toodles on through - no problem,
as do all previous versions of IE and other browsers.

Dont even need to do that, Even on medium security I can now log into cpanel
ok.
Cpanel uses cookied sessions to id the user (mail access) so the fix is for
cpanel cookies to issue a privacy policy value to the cookie, or for users
to 'force' IE to accept cookies from the particular site.

heh - I know how you feel - back in the olden days (it seems like centuries
ago) the release of ie5.5 completely screwed an intranet I was working on.
