Post subject: new paperless site, comments on building blocks
Archived from groups: biz>ecommerce (more info?)

Greetings. I want to share my site for some constructive criticism if you
would. It would be greatly appreciated. www.paperlessdesk.com --- No traffic
as yet, I tried some advertising with googles adwords and was able to get
some
traffic, but not able to make a sale. I am concerned that since I put the
site
together myself I am blindsided to something -- perhaps something simple --
that needs to be changed.

Technical info of the site:

Found linux servers to be the most cost effective.
You will notice the "x-cart" shopping system. I highly recommend it if you
are
even slightly technically minded.

The system will allow for various data exports and is fairly easy to
transport
to another server. (I know from personal experience with this.)

Anyone who can follow a similar course should consider it since you can save
a
lot of money in startup costs.

Thank you in advance and I hope someone finds this info useful.

Justin

I'm not sure if your main problem is with marketing or with the
product.

From a marketing standpoint you should be trying to set yourself up as
an expert in the targeted field. Your website doesn't contribute to
that image.
The word jumble that is your tagline ("A Paperless Desk is to Pay Less
Per Desk") was the first thing that slapped me in the face when I
looked at your site. Consider a revision such as "Pay Less Per Desk
with a Paperless Desk". The graphic at the top of the page does
nothing to instill confidence and when I clicked on it, it took me to
a splash screen comprised of the same graphic… pointless

I guess the shopping cart is fine. I never actually clicked it
because I was dumfounded by what I assume to be your flagship product
"How to Go Paperless For Under $100". The product description included
10 "easy" steps for going paperless.

1. Map a plan
2. Pick your hardware
3. Set up your software
4. Make a system
5. Convert current documents
6. Train employees
7. Maintain your system
8. Backups
9. Review for efficiency
10. Automation

How can all that be done for $100? The SG&A of such a project would
easily run thousands of dollars.

I am currently working with a team of developers on a turnkey
paperless office solution that will be one of the cheapest ones on the
market at just under 10k. Anyone that is seriously considering moving
towards a paperless office would see the $10 price tag on your
information and dismiss it the same way I just have. You need to build
the perceived value of your products.

I know I am being incredibly harsh in this post however I hope it
helped you understand why you haven't converted any traffic into
sales.

Hey Justin,

I'm going to point to the design itself as a purchase deterrent.
Sorry man, but it looks like a Word doc that just got slapped into
html. Not that it has anything to do with your products or your
company, but certainly doesn't lend you any professional credibility.
A website is like the clothes a company wears and you want to be in a
suit - got a professional audience? get a professional designer, don't
do it yourself. It's like Chris Rock said, "I can drive a car with my
foot, but that doesn't make it a good f%%kin idea."

No real marketing at this point. Still trying to perfect the idea.

I really like that mind if I use it? "pay less per desk with a
paperless desk" why didn't I think of that? It rolls off your tongue
better.

I do realize that of course - most paperless projects do run into the
tens of thousands of dollars, however, I suppose this could be made
more clear with better targeting. This plan - or guide - is really
targeting very small business owners or professionals who are willing
to spend time instead of money on becoming more efficient. Perhaps a
name change on the product is due - to target the right audience.

Thanks again, I can take it.

Thank you Adam --- that prompted me to (finally) call on the web
designer in my rolodex. You know, friends just will not tell you these
things so readily. One step closer to a working system some day...

Feel free to use that...

also, consider writing a bio for the site. gear it toward your
experiences in helping offices go paperless and give specific examples
of cost savings if that data is available.

best of luck

Hi Justin,

I very much agree with Adam. I would definitely think about finding
someone, or company/firm, that does professional Web design. A
well-designed website will pay itself back in folds and your business
image will be heightened. The current website certainly has a
"homemade" look and feel to it, something you want to avoid if you are
to be taken seriously.

You also will probably want to create a different logo for your
business, as it also could use some work. Typically, a logo will work
both in color and in black and white. Your current logo is pretty
ornate and would not work effectively printed in B&W, if you ever need
to get to that point by printing invoices, business cards, etc. It's
worth noting that many corporate logos are simple and have very few
colors. (e.g. 3M's logo is a very simple logo in red.)

One thing that I found particularly strange is that when the
"PaperLessDesk" logo on the top left of the page is clicked, it goes
to some sort of splash page (http://www.paperlessdesk.com/xcart/).
This splash page is effectively useless since it adds no value to the
audience. (I would also argue that most splash pages add little
value, except for, say, a movie website done in Macromedia Flash.)

Walter Weeks
