I've a feeling this might be a simple one ... how can I make, say, Word or
Excel files that I hyperlink to, open in the appropriate application outside
of the browser? Is it something to do with the MIME types? I'm using W2K and
IIS5 and I have access to the server. Any help'd be appreciated...

There are some office server extensions for that. Check out the MS
newsgroups at <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="news://msnews.microsoft.com/" target="_blank">news://msnews.microsoft.com/</a>

You can't force that. The best you can achieve is to provide instructions
with the link.

Unless it's been messed with your server is probably sending the correct
mime types already.

Thanks William - might there be a scripting solution using ShellExecute or
anything like that?

Take a step back. What are you tring to achieve? Word/Excel file formats
are proprietry - is this really the best way to present your information?

If your visitor has these applications on their workstation they probably
already know how to work with them ;o)
