Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Win XP Pro.

IIS 5.0

FrontPage 2000

In the MMC for IIS, there is no asterisk before the computer name. The
asterisk is supposed to designate the root web.

Same software, Win2K machine, asterisk is there and FrontPage/IIS works
perfectly.

On the Win XP Pro machine, nothing friggin works.

I've started, stopped, restarted, reloaded IIS and FrontPage Server
Extensions. I cannot get this damn thing to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and will be rewarded with cash if
that's what it takes.

Need to get FrontPage working correctly on this Win XP computer before I
die.

Thanks

Brett Anderson

Yes, as Jeff said, it would help to know exactly what "nothing friggin
works" means ...

I seem to sense a little frustration here...

Except it's mine, not yours! I'd love to help out, but I simply can't
diagnose "nothing friggin works" with the tools I have at my disposal.
Error messages, specific symptoms, whatever makes you think it's not
working, all these could help relieve my frustration. Please, I'm
begging you, I have to get your problem solved before you die.

Using the exact error message you provided I'm getting an almost
complete blank - weird......
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22nothing+friggin+works%22" target="_blank">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22nothing+frig...+works%</a>

Seriously, if you post some useful information there are people on
this group who will be able to help you.... you just have to *want* to
let them help you....

OK, head hanging low, properly chastised..... Wink In my defence, my
frustration level was high when I wrote that at 2.35am after another 9 hour
stint on trying to get my web site back up......

Win XP Pro, 2.4Ghz, 256 Ram, IBM R40 laptop.
IIS 5.1 (came with XP), is installed
FrontPage 2000, upgrade version from full 98 version (although loaded
without 98, just needed to show it the 98 CD)
FrontPage Server Extensions 2000
Various additional Microsoft and other vendor sofwares, all functioning
correctly.

All the relevant screens <MMC?> I can find to check IIS and FPSE are showing
everything to be operating correctly.
FrontPage will not run correctly. Error was "no server found at
<mycomputername>, check that a server is running. If I clicked through the
error, the web site would load, but certain functions would not work
correctly, mostly, if not all, related to the FP Server Extensions.
Opening the live web, off my host's server, worked ok as best I could tell.
My big problem is something wasn't working in the background of FP, and when
I published to the live web, it corrupted some parts of the live web,
including the shopping cart.

Now, after me screwing with stuff I don't know enough about I'm getting a
different error. Now if I try to open a local web site, I get "An error
occured accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors, if authoring against a
web server, please contact the webmaster for this server's sit. Webmasters,
please see the system log for more details.

With this new error, I can't click through it to the web site. It won't
open.

System log says "Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions: Received empty
response from Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions"

Now, I realize that all of this appears to be pointing to the Server
Extensions themselves. But.....

During the hours I've spent reading the help files and surfing the web for
an answer, I found an interesting piece of information. According to the
IIS help files, a local server name will be prefixed by an asterix in the
MMC. This is definately the case with Win2K Pro, as I cranked up my old
laptop (that this one is replacing) to check.

On this machine, the computer name is the only entry on the left side of the
IIS MMC, but there is no asterisk, which implies that IIS is not serving
through that machine name. Does that make sense?

What I think I need to do is get the IIS working correctly so that I can get
FP to work correctly. I've had no luck in FrontPage or XP groups here at
news.microsoft.com, so I'm back where I started, in the IIS group. (my
original post was a couple of weeks ago).

It's my feeling that this problem with the local server is causing the FP
Server Extensions to fail.

Please help if you can.

Have you installed the latest Frontpage extensions ? You can them from
here :
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/Winfpse.asp" target="_blank">http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnser...t/html/</a>

and you can get the FPSE2002 extensions here :
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpse02win.asp" target="_blank">http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnser...t/html/</a>

Try this KB article :

The easiest way to check is to create a simple 'Hello World' HTML or
ASP file and see if you can access it locally on your IIS server.
Check this KB article for steps to take to ensure that IIS is working
correctly
:
Web Pages Not Serving from IIS

Use the KB article above to check the status of your IIS installation
and then see how you get on from there.

The only download available for XP on this page is a security update.
Attempting to perform that update ends with a note that my version does not
need it as I already have a service pack installed (that must contain the
security patch)

I started out with the 02 extensions and uninstalled them because I wasn't
have any luck with them. Decided to go back to the 2000 extensions because
I was using them successfully on my Win2K machine. Given what I've learned
over the last couple of weeks, I'll give them another try.

While the actual error message is the same, none of the other criteria
matches. i.e., I don't have any of the listed items in the log. I did go
through and follow the work arounds given in the bulletin, but it appears to
be for Win2K/WinNT because I get to a point and my screen no longer matches
the instructions.

IIS serves the pages no problem. Which confuses me even more. <Sigh> I
think most of my problem lies with this bastard operating system. Time to
sacrifice the laptop extras and go to a full install of Win2K.

Thanks for trying. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.
