Hi,

I want to fully describe the nature of each image on my site by giving
each a long file name with underscores inbetween each word is there a
limit to the length that will be acceptable to Google before it
penalises my site? Thank you.

No idea, but - seems to be preferred.

You're OK with underscores, that won't be seen as spamming - Google will see
it as a very long and unusual word.

Is it the image file or the web page that's getting the long name?

Whilst it's your choice, I can't help feeling that there are better ways of
dealing with the issue: alt text, title text... etc. If it were a practical
idea, I'm sure we'd have seen it before - OTOH, you may be an innovatory
visionary so don't let me put you off.

There is, IIRC, a limit of 256 characters to filenames on most servers.

Why not use the alt tag or the longdesc tag?

Perhaps the alt and longdesc attributes would be more helpful.

From <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/objects.html" target="_blank">http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/objects.html</a> :

alt: "For user agents that cannot display images, forms, or applets, this
attribute specifies alternate text."

longdesc: "This attribute specifies a link to a long description of the
image. This description should supplement the short description provided
using the alt attribute."<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Given that most servers are of *nix variation how can that be? A few
servers running windoze are limited by file name length - but limits are
the norm for windoze - I think?Smile<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Linux on ext2/ext3 are limited to 256 character names. Probably with other
filesystems too. Possibly with other Unices too.

Holey moley you're right.

How very un-Unixy.

I'm going to start a rumor that the next version of Linux won't be case
sensitive. Smile

Pretty sure Windows (NTFS) is limited to 255 character filenames too.

Now if you just put an "ag" before all them "h"s you'll get an idea
why us gentle folk from alt.internet.search-engines don't often stray
into the html groups.
