You know, this is something I've never done......I know folks who have names
for their computers, cars, guitars, and all sorts of other things.....For
some reason I've never felt entirely comfortable giving human names to
things......It may be something to do with my fear and terror of the day
when the internet gains self awareness, and decides to fight back against
humanity.......I don't think I could handle that sort of humiliation from an
entity called "Pinky"....

Those were the days... too bad my cable modem doesn't play that music
anymore Sad.

Way back when, I used to put the tapes with my BASIC programs in the
tape recorder. What a sound!

Why? I've used my modem to listen to my voicemail (it was quite a loud 33k6
ZyXEL faxmodem). Programmed it to dail the number, pause, dail the
passcode, pause, and choose the "Listen to messages" option. It worked
quite well.

Modems don't speak. They transfer the voices of people speaking.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I guess you would be a geek if you use the VoiceModem headset when making
calls and use it's fax capabilities 24/7 (while offline ofcourse) for
incoming fax's. Anyone ever used those features? I found them quite
useless.

Does it make me a geek if I call a computer tech support place
after trying in vain for months to figure out why I can't do a disk
cleanup only to be asked a series of questions of about my virus
software, firewall etc. and to be complimented by said computer
tech?

He was impressed because I had a firewall, a virus program and
used Spybot S&D. He said they recommend spybot to all the
first time clients that call them.

So because I get warm praises and referred to as 'experienced'
by a computer help technician does that make me a geek?

It's not available everywhere. Indeed in the city where our offices
now are, the telephone exchange is not even digital!

Not just you. We moved our offices to Southampton, a sizeable city,

Not in any way, but it does tell us you are not a super-geek, who would have
researched the broadband available in his area before purchasing his home,
and would have moved to a new location in order to get it, no matter what my
wife...uh...his wife says. Smile
