Have read lots of articles and posts and can't seem to find someone
with the same problem.
Eventually suceeded in installing iis on xp Pro SP2 - but that's
another story. IIS appears in management console but as soon as I
click on it, it freezes up.
Any suggestions??
The more I look the more I seem to be hearing about people having
troubles installing iis on xp pro sp2. Is it possible? If not what are
the alternatives. >> Stay informed about: iis installation problems on xp Pro SP2 |

Thank you for responding
I had problems of failed installations and the unable to copy file
error but but when I eventually was sucessful it seem to go through
without errors. I did not install SMTP as this seem to be one of the
causes of the problems - certainly very slow.
There are several errors in the even log like World Wide Web Service
failed to start, W3SVC failed to bind to instance 1... etc. None seem
to be generated when I attempt to use the iis console. IS ther
anythisn specific I should look for.
I tried resolution 4 in the url you sent. I could add the iis console
but the console froze as soon as as I tried to select it.
Any suggestion from here?? Help greatly appreciated

I would sugget you reinstall using the following:
a) uninstall IIS (safe or normal mode)
b) Remove files and folders
%windir%/system32/inetsvr/
/inetpub/
%windir%/iisx.log (x=5 for w2k, 6 for XP, Win03)
(use safe mode to delete)
c) reboot, reinstall IIS, repatch machines
if error msgs during installation post it here.
then check iisX.log file for more clues.

Thank you for your previous information and suggestions.
I have reinstalled IIS a couple of times and I get the same problem.
There were no errors during installation and the installation process
seem to go relatively fast. In the last instance I also installed
message queuing and the smtp server which did not cause a problem
Straight after installation IIS console is available and working. The
default web site is stopped due to "unexpected error 0x8ffe2740
occured" and so far I haven't been able to sort that issue out.
After reboot (following iis reinstall) I get the problem of the IIS
console freezing. There are some errors and alerts in the event logger
that may be relevant like "hanging application mmc.exe ..."
I looked in iis6.log. I don't know what I am looking at but I can't
see any log entries that seem to be errors or indicating a fault.
I hope you are able to make further suggestions.

For the unexepected error, it looks like some other programs is using IIS
required port - 80.
what software you do you have in the box? firewall, antivirus, p2p ?
"Unexpected Error 0x8ffe2740 Occurred" Error Message When You Try to Start a
Web Site

Next, if it hang again - can you post the complete event log here?

no reply.

Here is the mmc hanging event
Hanging application mmc.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, hang module
hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.
However, the ^*&*#$@ thing is now working including the default web
site. I swear it was spontaneous because the only thing that I did/saw
was an automatic windows update.
Thank you very much for you help.
