Can anybody recommend a web hosting company that will look after DNS for us
properly? We host our website with 1and1 in the UK and have just moved
office, they are refusing to change the A record for our primary MX
(mail.amtleasing.co.uk).
They created the record in the first place, and set it as the primary MX.
They are now saying "we did it once but we won't do it again". As a result
our entire company is receiving no email
I have mailed support & hostmaster @ schlund.de to see if they can help
(being the company behind 1and1)
But this is just not good enough for us. We need a hosting company that do
the DNS stuff (uk2.net are great for this, but I don't know how they are
with web hosting) and also:
"have the rewrite apache mod.. And.. Um.. Yeah, obviously mysql/php.."
(<---- this is what the web designer says!)
Any advice would be /greatly/ appreciated
cheers,

Leave the hosting with the host...and handle DNS yourself. Use a DNS
service like zoneedit.com, easydns.com, etc.

Do 1&1 insist on being the Tagholder for hosted domains?
If not, change tagholders to one that is just a little more helpful and
leave the web hosting where it is.

Hosting is something that can be done well. DNS is something that can be
done well. The two dont necessarily go hand in hand. The same is true of
most services (email, registration, backups). Like most things there are
pros and cons to buying everything at one source vs breaking it down and
shopping seperately.
If you are really looking for a hosting company that does DNS well then
someone can probably recommend one. But my personal opinion is to look for
(or stay with) a hosting company that does hosting well. Get DNS from
someone doing DNS such as ZoneEdit.

how exactly does that work? I wasn't sure if the hosting company would let
us access the webspace by ip address (virtual domains?) I understand the DNS
part of it okay, but what about the rest?

ok, i'll rephrase. I am not sure if it is possible to use a regular web
hosting company with our own DNS hmmm. will their "virtual domains" or
whatever they use still bring up the correct site .... ugh I'm confused.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: hosting company that do DNS properly? |

The DNS tells the internet "if you are looking for <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.example.com" target="_blank">www.example.com</a> then
go to 123.123.123.123". The web server at 123.123.123.123 has a setting
that says "incoming requests for <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.example.com" target="_blank">www.example.com</a> get directed to
~example and bring up any index.html you find there". The two things
have very little to do with each other.
Now things like access to a newsserver, or access to a sendmail server.
These are often tied into large blocks of IPs. But thats something that
applies more to your personal ISP than to a hosting service.

Time for a new host.
Your host should answer all these questions. They should explain it to you
clearly. They should not leave you alone until they are satisfied that you
are happy and have all your questions answered.
They should also tell you not to hesitate to contact them if they can be of
any further help.

Many hosting co's, like us, will do the dns for you - if you
wish. Some, like us also provide a web based GUI where you
can freely manage your own dns so if eg you were hosting
with us but wanted your e-mail elsewhere you can do it.
I would sugest you look around for a host that supplies both
the hosting you want and the dns - preferably as a seperate
option - that you can self manage.

We have decided to host with Host Europe (WebFusion), and do DNS with
123reg.co.uk . Funny thing is, although their FAQ shows the DNS stuff, I
can't actually see anything about it on the site.. maybe that stuff only
shows up once a domain is transferred to them. Shall wait and see.
Any feelings on these two service providers?<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: hosting company that do DNS properly? |
