Post subject: Really need help before my mind goes for good
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

OK I really need help badly. I have no idea what is going on anymore.

I will preface this with the fact that this is my first site. So it's
obvious that I don't really know what I am doing yet.

Brief history: Site was put together by myself using the Yahoo Page Builder
software. (OK I know that might have been my first mistake and you can stop
laughing at me in an hour or two. I thought it would make things "simpler",
really I did.) I'm sure there are weird things with the code, though I
think I fixed most of it, most probably the hard way...

Anyway I did the whole submit my site though the SEO company free trial
period and nothing much happened...Big surprise....So I read more
information. Then I got listed in Google but just my URL was found but no
indexing. I read and reread a whole supply of information. During this
time even my URL was dropped for Google, then after resubmitting, again my
URL was there, and briefly for a few days I was indexed. Oh what joy! Then
I wasn't indexed. So OK the Google info says that could happen while the
index is updated, but then I had to wait yet another month. Then finally lo
and behold, I am re-indexed, not only that I am coming up everywhere now
that Google has anything to do with. I am in the first two pages! I am so
excited as 2 weeks go by and I'm still in! Even Yahoo loves me more than
Google! The googlebot was coming by for daily visits. It was great! People
were visiting the site. Business looked good! I'm think I'm one Miss
Smartypants. Then whack, it starts again....No more index, but wait the
next day I'm back in! OK! Then again it happens. So I take out all the
webrings even though they were legitimate and had to do directly with my
site...I am still in the index, and then failure I am no longer indexed....

So now humbled and slightly insane here is how things stand...It's been
months and as of today I am indexed but only under keywords that do not
matter. Yes I can be found by typing in my URL but who knows how long that
will last. The most important key words are "renaissance gown" it's all I
need and yet....I'm no longer listed. I know Google has been having some
"issues". I know I am not completely insane, yet. Does any one know what I
should do? Is there something about my pages that are really bad. I have
used no cloaking techniques or any other tricks deemed illegal by google.
At least not on purpose.

Oh the web site is www.stimpzillasumptuarylaw.com...

Oh great and might ones of this board can you help me?

Do you have a number of solid inbound links from other sites? If not,
that is the problem. If yes, then wait a month for Google to hopefully
sort this out.

And, your site is taking unacceptably long to load for me on dial up.
Could be the path, but my guess is bad site design.

I have just a few links that are from well ranked pages
and I am working on more. Other sites ahead of mine in the index have no
links that I can find either on their site or on the Google backlink bar.
Ugh...don't want to wait another month. How is it that you can be indexed
for 3 weeks and have it taken away?

The page is cached at 46K probably not very good for dial up, but still less
than most in a simular category. It is more of a destination page so most
will wait, but I will go ahead and see what can be stripped away.

With new sites they often drop in and out the first month or 2. Those
few links from well ranked pages should be OK, if by "well ranked" you
mean have a decent Google toolbar PageRank. Although,
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.renaissancemagazine.com/links.html" target="_blank">http://www.renaissancemagazine.com/links.html</a> where you have a link has
so many links it is near worthless. Try and get a link on a page with at
least a PR5 with few outbound links.

As a general rule, more then 10-15 seconds to load on dial up is bad
site design. In particular, you need to get that home page small and
quick loading. I am assuming that once people get to the site and you
get their interest, they'd tolerate it if the internal pages were slow
loading. Admittedly, your site is about something so obscure the surfers
might be willing to wait around for it to load.

I was told that the load time was about 4 or 5 seconds. I agree that 10-15
might be too long. Was just working on ways to fix it anyway. A good deal
of what appears to be text is actaully a picture. I liked the font but it's
not worth loosing people to such a long wait. I think I'll switch it all to
Garamond which is a favorite of mine anyway. Must compromise. If you
notice any thing else please let me know.

Search engines can't index pictures, but can text. Try and get good
keyword density on the home page for the important search terms.
"Renaissance" "gowns" and "dresses" seem the most critical. Note that
with Google "gowns" and "gown" are 2 different words. If you want to
come up high for both, you need both on the page with good density.
Typically, people search on the plural. However, you should try for
both.

Not very good for bookmarking and maybe this is what Google

Not really sure as I don't know if that matters to Google or not.
Should put something more up there though like your site name etc.

I bookmarked it though being as I have an interest in medieval
dresses and the SCA. Smile

Google can index that without a title just fine. It just likely will
do really poorly on searches. Free hint lisajane:

<TITLE>Stimpzilla's Sumptuary Law: Renaissance gowns and dresses<TITLE>

Not ideal from an SEO perspective, but beats no title, and hits what
seems to be the most obvious keywords for your site.

Thanks Heidi Lady Drachewyn.

There is something odd about the title. I do in fact have a proper title in
the properties section, however yahoo insist that the "home page" be called
index and I don't seem to be able to get the page title to over ride the
index requirement. Which is odd as the other pages will do this.

I suppose there are two answers to making this work. One is to try the
newest Yahoo program for web site building and see if works better. The
other is to just bite whatever I have to and drink a lot of beer and just
deal with Front Page.

I think I got the point. I re-checked the index page and found what I think
is the problem, now there should be a more proper title. For some reason
the old info from the meta tag info that was produced by the submitnet free
trial was still there alonfg with the newer info that I had placed in the
properties box. I deleted the old stuff and checked the source code on the
saved page and it looks better.

Geez you guys are all so nice! I might even find parts of my mind soon LOL
Amazing though that I did get into the index for 3 weeks at all!

Did you try and just change something:

<title>Stimpzilla's Sumptuary Law: Renaissance Gown, Renaissance Dress,
Custom Gown, Bridal Gown</title>

Is what I am seeing. And, I'd recommend:

<title>Stimpzilla's Sumptuary Law: Renaissance Gowns & Dresses; Bridal
Gown</title>

Why this is better is a long explanation, but I know enough about
search engine optimization that I assure you it is.

Personally I would reverse them for better search engine optimization, and
lowercase... but that is just me...

Check my suggested revised title elsewhere in this thread. Google has
a title length limit, and yours was too long. Hmm...still too long.
Drat. It'll cut of after "Bridal". Still a definite improvement, and
other search engines allow longer. I run my main site title longer than
Google allows on this theory.
