Post subject: Please help with domains
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello Everyone,

Word of warning, I a smart, computer literate person, but a total
newbie when it comes to this stuff.

I'm running WindowsXP Professional and IIS 5.1. I'm getting
married in the fall and just want to set up a little web page where I
can put all kinds of stuff about the wedding. I just registered a
".net" domain name (on Yahoo!, if that's relevant) for the site. I have
a broadband connection with a static IP address. I have a router
distributing traffic to my PC, my laptop, and an Internet phone.

I set up my virtual servers for TCP on port 80 in my router to
point to my PC, and I can now see my Web page from any computer by
typing in the IP address of the router. I can set up Yahoo! to
automatically forward traffic from my domain name to that IP address,
but then users who type in my domain just see the IP, not the nice
domain name.

How do I (or can I) set up my computer so that you see
www.example.net with my content?

Also, is this the best newsgoup to post this question to or is
there a better place?

Thanks,
Dexter

P.S. Please CC my actual email address when you reply.

I have to wonder why you'd want to direct internet traffic onto your local
machine. Do you never reboot or lose power? Do you never run
processor-intensive processes that may steal cycles from visitors? If you
have a site provided with your ISP, publish your site to that server and let
them handle the access and traffic. Then update your DNS info for your
registered site to point to the address your ISP provides to you.

Note IIS 5.1 on XP has a connection limit of 10.

That means about one user can browse at a time, maybe two.

Web hosting is cheap, probably well worth the price of not having any open
ports on your home PC... there may be yet as unpatched or unreleased holes
in it after all...

You need a properly configured DNS and a static IP address. Yahoo
isn't routing to your IP for any request to the domain, it's
*translating* or forwarding. If you have a dynamic IP address,
there's no easy solution, but one of the dynamic IP services such as
NoIP.com or DYNIP.com might help.

The other solution is to use a web hosting service and not your home
system for your site.

As good as any, though it's also a DNS issue.

If you're going to look for help here, stay here. Many of us don't do
email responses, there isn't enough time. Plus, if the entire
conversation is held here, anyone using Google can find it and save
them from asking (and us from answering) the same question again.
