So there has been a lot of buzz lately about google's upcoming payment
services, and how it might be like paypal.

Well, I am positive I have it all figured out.

Google has searching, and offers up ads on the side for products.
Google has Froogle, a searching service which indexes store products
for display as well. Well, think about the next logical step...

Google will provide hosting and payment services for people and
companies selling products. Consumers will love it because their CC #
will be going through Google, which they trust, versus a small site. On
top of that, consumers will be able to find what they are looking for
without running into broken links, unfriendly designs, or going through
site after site.

Google will get some small $ for each transaction (perhaps a
percentage). Sellers will love it because they won't have to worry
about server uptime as much, payment systems, or security... plus they
have the worlds' biggest customer base at their fingers.

This powerful move will literally turn Google into the worlds biggest
store.

Everyone wins. Buyers / Sellers / Google. Well, not everyone wins. Ebay
sure won't win. Verisign won't win. PayPal won't win. Yahoo won't win.

Google really has outdone itself this time. Good move.

This a double edge sword. Using services like PayPal and the other
factoring services tells people the site owner does not qualify for a
merchant card account or can't afford it. That's no big deal if you are
working local garage sales where you can see the merchandise. However, it's
risky for people trying to purchase items via the Internet.

It is helpful for a better sales ratio if a site accepts PayPal in addition
to a standard merchant card account. Using only PayPal may result in a site
not selling anything. A site must also have a method to display usable
invoices for check sales.

But Google is not a store. Neither is Amazon. They are only third party
resellers of other people's work. READ THE CONTRACT! READ THE CONTRACT
AGAIN! You are agreeing to accept all of the liabilities and the factoring
site just takes their cut of the profits.

The folks who have no business experience or funding also lose because they
get lost in the shuffle and won't sell enough to break even. There are
thousands and thousands of products listed on Froogle that have yet to
generate a single order.

I will admit a search on Froogle is handy for deciding whether it is worth
bothering to offer a particular item for sale on the Internet.
