Okay so I have come a long way and i working towards completion of my
site and I am looking for a good host. I am trying to be careful about
who I go with because if I am going to pay for anything it had better
be worth it. What is the best webhost out there? Also what should I be
looking for? What is the average needed space for a medium sized site.
I have a chatroom several forms and a message board, and several basic
pages.
Thanks >> Stay informed about: How to know I have a good webhost |

And always remember that even if you are lucky enough find a good
webhost today, you must prepare for the following:
a) the current owners sell the operation to a bunch of idiots
while glowingly reassuring you that the new overlords are
swell and grand. Then suddenly you're down hard for 4
days.
b) The owner dies a premature death. Utter chaos ensues
including downtime with no end in sight. His widow is
finally is able to get things stabilized months later.
c) Owner becomes ill, is hospitalized, no one does accounts
receivable or invoices folks for renewal, and one day your
servers quit responding and you find out on
webhostingtalk.com that it's because they weren't able to
pay their bills and are now out of business.
Welcome to the story of my 3 prior webhosts.
For 1000 bonus points and a free oven mitt, can you name them?
Best Regards,

Are you serious? You are seriously asking "what is the best webhost?"
Have you heard of Netcraft?

AH, Your-site.com, MIS.
Except for the last on that list, *none* of them could have been
avoided. The first is merely how businesses in the real world operate
(there's no reason why a business shouldn't sell up if the owner wants
to), and in the second you certainly cannot /blame/ anyone. The last one
on the list could be put down to incompetence, but no one here knows the
whole story either.

Agreed.
But it is a story that leads me to gravitating to hosting operations
that have an organization that is large enough to be independent of
the grand poohba falling out of the picture, and large enough that a
new owner wouldn't completely screw the pooch so quickly.
It's all a necessary evil of the hosting industry and what makes this
question such a moving target and a pain in the ass to deal with.

With round-robin DNS, multiple IP addresses are returned. If the
client program is smart enough, it will try each of the addresses in
order until one works.
Since the order of the IP addresses is rotated by the name server on
each retrieval (that's why it's call "round-robin"), round-robin DNS
provides a crude version of load balancing as well as a crude version
of failover.
Of course all of this is contingent on using name servers that provide
the capability to return multiple IP addresses, preferably in a
round-robin fashion.

Even with a dedicated server, you should still have a contingency plan (you
know this, of course) should your server blow up.

Oooh!
Welcome back, Tina <g>
Those (very few) of us with a dedicated server are in a slightly
different boat. But then we pay a lot more for what we hope will be a
higher quality service....
Okay, so blind faith isn't just for the religious! <bg>

Or your hosting company blows up.

The more sophisticated way is to use a load-balancing router in front
of a server farm. The advantage of such a setup is that you can add
and remove servers without needing a DNS change (and hence the
propagation delay); a typical load-balancing setup will be configured
to allow individual servers to be enabled and disabled at the flick of
a switch. Add a multihomed Internet connection and you've got as close
to full redundancy as a single site possibly can have.
Having said that, there's nothing wrong with round-robin DNS for
simple load balancing when you don't need that kind of sophistication.
Simpler is better if you don't need complexity; more complex is only
better if the additional sophistication is actually going to be of
significant benefit.
