These are my stats for one of my websites just for this month so far:

Monthly Statistics for August 2003

Total Hits 87609
Total Files 72850
Total Pages 8082
Total Visits 6909

Is that good? I have to admit I really don't understand what is better to
look at,
hits, pages, visits etc.

IMO, "Visits" is the number to care about. Those (theoretically) are the
people actually spending time on the site.
A pageview can be a onetime referral from a search engine where they look at
a page and go away.
To be counted as a visit, they have to view multiple pages.

Usually a "visit" is a unique IP visiting your site, which can't be counted
again until it has left your site for at least 30mins (the usual amount of
time for these things).

"Pages" is the total number of HTML-type pages (anything you've told your
stats program is an HTML page) which were served. So an interesting thing
you can determine from these two numbers is how many pages people view on
average when they visit the site.

6909 unique IPs visited your site (assuming 30min spacing), while over the
same period, 8082 pages were served in total.

8082 / 6909 = 1.17

Therefore, the average visitor to that site only views 1.17 pages before
leaving. Not a really good count, but at least you're getting a lot of
visits.

Wow thanks for that. Now I get it. Smile

I have also been getting a lot of people with IE adding the site to their
favorites it seems
if a good judge of that is how many 404's exist for the favicon.ico image.

I rough counted at least 50 of those favicon.ico 404's in the current 300
errors.

"Hits" are requests made to the http server, every image, stylesheet
and page &c. requested constitutes a "hit".

"Pages" are pages served, this is what I look at.

"Total Visits" is just plain misleading, I'd ignore that.

Noooooooooo!

Don't listen, Heidi. This is totally misleading due to the nature of
the Internet. We don't all use fixed IP addresses, we get dynamicaly
allocated IP addresses from ISPs and AOL uses multiple IP addresses
during a single web browsing session.

The only statistic that actually has any relevance is the one
preceeded by a dollar sign going into the bank account (sales, or
other revenue).

True that does have merit but if I am to get advertisers I need to
show them some traffic stats :p
