Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

I have setup a new Server 2003 system w/IIS6.
I was unable to migrate my websites from my old NT4.0 /
IIS system (which had fp2002 extensions on it). The IIS
configuration file became corrupt. So I
copied the files to my new system, configured the
websites, pointed to the newly copied subfolders and
then 'Configure(ed) Server Extensions 2002' (from the
Tasks menu). After I type in the admin password, an html
screen says 'Configuring fp extensions (or something like
that) - there is no termination message -thats it.
Upon checking the server extensions tab in the web it
claims that an old version of extensions is installed and
to upgrade from the tasks menu - I do that and get the
same thing- no termination message and it still thinks it
needs upgrading. What to do? I cant use the migration tool
as it requires the old IIS to be running, and my old site
is no longer functioning.

Hi david,

I'd suggest you can check the event viewer to find any related error
meesage. It will be appreciated that you tell them all to me.

Thanks for responding.
There are no event messages...
In the case of the old NT IIS, when I attempt to connect
to the web server with MMC I get the (really lame) error
message of "Unable to administer the WEB service on xxxx
because the following error occured: Data invalid"
(Microsoft, you have to do a better job reporting errors!
What data???). Previously I had recieved messages
indicating that the IIS configuration data was corrupt, so
I have given up trying to resurrect the old NT system, I
am now focused on just getting my new 2003/IIS 6 system up
with the web files from the other system.

Now the new IIS 6 system seems to work for the most part,
but it thinks that the server extensions 2002 need to be
installed. When I envoke the "configure server extensions
2002" task (and click the submit button in the Server
Extensions Install window), I get the following message in
a IE window (http://webserver:3040/fpadmdll.dll) "Please
wait while your changes are processed" The status bar at
the bottom indicates "Done" and nothing else happens. No
errors, the system is fully functional, I can close the IE
window, but when I go back to the web site I just
configured, the server extensions tab says that the
extensions are not installed.

Hi dmolley,

Thank you for replying!

I'd suggest you remove the _vti* like diretories in your website directory
which are creaeted by frontpage server extension 2002 at NT4. Then please
try to configure your site by Win2003 frontpage server extension 2003 by
clicking the "configure server extensions 2002" as you have specified in
above post. It will be apprectiated that you tell me the result.

Thank you for using Microsoft Newsgroup!

Ok - I solved the problem, however I am not sure what exactly causes the
issue - but it is definatly a 'bug' or 'unexpected feature'.

It turns out that even when Creating a NEW WEB Site the new site is
unable to be configured for frontpage extensions. Again - no errors, no
messages to indicate that it did not create the extensions.
I uninstalled the Application Server (IIS) in Windows Components. Then
reinstalled it.
I also had to place my website home directories in a different location
than where they had been before, or the same problem would occur. This
seems to indicate that there was some directory
permissions/configurations that was being inherited from the old
directories and causing IIS to freak-out. I don't have the time to
experiment and investigate exactly how to reproduce the problem. My
solution was to create new websites in clean directories, then configure
each for extensions, then copy all files (except the _vti
subdirectories) from the old site to the new site home directories. This
seems to work OK now.

Hi David,

Thank you for replying!

One simple way can help you to find whether this issue is related to the
permission of directory. You can check the security property of the old
directory and the new directory. You can compare the ACE from the two ACL
to see any different so that you may find the culprit in this scenario.

If the ACE from the two ACLs are the same, this may be a bug. You can
report this to Microsoft Local Product Support Service(PSS). The PSS
support professional will research this more, then he will tell you whether
this is a bug or not. If it is really a bug, we can build one QFE or patch
to strengthen Frontpage Extension. You can find the Microsoft Local Product
Support Service From support.microsoft.com. Please go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx
